Mathers family creates annual Festival grant
A lasting legacy
Ila and Arnold Mathers have opted to create a legacy grant
fund for the Blyth Festival that will continue well beyond
their lifetimes. The pair have been heavily involved with the
Festival for a number of years, attending plays since the
Festival's inception. Ila also served on the Blyth Festival
Board of Directors for six years and the couple has
volunteered at the Festival for a number of years. (Photo

Ila and Arnold Mathers recently
established the Mathers' Family
Legacy within the South Huron
Community Fund to create a yearly
grant benefitting the Blyth Festival
that will continue well beyond their
lifetime.
Ila and Arnold have been regular
theatre patrons since the inception of
the Blyth Festival and have attended
over 150 plays. Ila was a Blyth
Festival Board member for six years
and the couple has volunteered as
ushers at the theatre and helped at
the yearly book sale. They also
donated seats when the theatre was
refurbished.
Suzannne Mathers, their daughter
and financial advisor at Raymond
James, suggested their participation
in the South Huron Community
Fund and made the arrangements to
set up the Mathers' Family Legacy.
"The South Huron Community
Fund helps donors support the
projects and charities that they are
passionate about," said Tom Prout,
Chair. "Establishing a family legacy
with our organization is easy and can
be set up to benefit a specific
charitable cause or the general fund
supporting priorities in our
community."
Whether the priorities relate to the
arts or the environment, to youth or
the elderly, the South Huron
Community Fund is dedicated to
supporting the long-term needs of
our region. Funds raised create a
permanent endowment that
generates annual grants for local
charitable organizations. The fund's
first series of grants is expected to be
issued in the fall of 2018 by a

realizes how little she knows about
the recent history. As she comes to
understand the damage done by the

this act of displacement reverberates
on land grossly exploited by the

Using humour and movement,
Ipperwash by Falen Johnson

OPP charges 587 over holidays
The Ontario Provincial Police
(OPP) charged 587 drivers with
impaired driving during its annual
Festive Reduce Impaired Driving
Everywhere (RIDE) campaign,
which ran from Nov. 24, 2017 to
Jan. 2, 2018.
An additional 366 drivers were
issued a warn range suspension and
had their driver's licence suspended
for having a blood alcohol
concentration between .05 and .08
per cent.
By comparison, the OPP charged
623 impaired drivers and issued 407
warn range suspensions during the
2016-2017 Festive RIDE campaign.
The OPP remained highly focused
on keeping roads safe over the
holidays, reflecting on the 44 lives
lost in alcohol/drug-related
collisions on OPP-patrolled roads in
2017. Officers conducted more than
9,830 RIDE events throughout the
province, surpassing the 7,343
RIDE events conducted over
a
the previous season's campaign.
Over the holidays, OPP Drug
Recognition Evaluators (DRE)
assisted with the tools and expertise
to test for and detect drug
impairment in drivers. Of the 587
drivers charged, 29 were charged
with drug impairment.
While the OPP maintained a
heightened focus on impaired
drivers during the campaign, officers
enforce impaired driving laws
around the clock, 365 days a year. In
2017, the OPP charged 4,915 drivers
with alcohol -impaired charges and
238 drivers with drug -impaired
charges and issued 2,995 warn range
suspensions.
