Cottrills win World Curling Tour bonspiel Better change this stupid Belgrave's Shawn and Katie Cottrill travelled to Charlotte, North Carolina in late December to win in the World Curling Tour Mixed Doubles bonspiel. The duo were undefeated in the round robin and championship play. The Cottrils now look towards the provincial and national championships later this year. (Denny Scott photo) PEOPLE AROUND BELGRAVE By Linda Campbell Call 357-2188 Neil and Joan Vincent greeted and handed out the bulletins at Knox United Church on Sunday, Dec. 31. "Joy to the World" was the introduction hymn. Brian Hymers lit the Christ candle welcoming the Lord to the service. The candle was lit as a sign of His presence, being within each of us this and everyday. The welcoming hymn, "Infant Holy, Infant Lowly" was sung, followed by the announcements and celebrations. Happy birthday was sung to Rita Potter. Brian Potter reported that the Wingham PeeWee hockey team had won the Silver Stick tournament and would go on to play in Forest. After the sharing of the Peace of Christ the call to worship was read. After the choir sang a selection Roger and Debbie Hopper read scripture from Isaiah 62: 10-12, Titus 3: 4-9 and Luke 2: 21-24. After singing the hymn of response which was "What Child Is This?" Nancy Jardin reported on the Minute for Missions, which was entitled, "Mission and Service Through the Years". Doug Walker and Ken Procter took up the offering which was dedicated. After the Lord's Prayer was repeated in unison, the closing hymn, "Angels from the Realms of Glory" was sung and the benediction and blessing concluded the morning worship service. Brian and Rita Potter greeted worshippers and handed out the bulletins at Knox United Church on Sunday, Jan. 7. Brian lit the Christ candle. As we rekindle this flame we also rekindle our youth, our baptism, our confession of faith, our union with You. "The First Noel" was the welcoming hymn. After the call to worship the congregation shared the Peace of Christ. The children's hymn was "Good Christian Friends Rejoice". After the choir sang Muriel Coultes read scripture from Genesis 1: 1-5, Isaiah 60: 1-6, Matthew 2: 1- 12, Mark 1: 4-11, and Acts 19" 1-7. For the sermon, Brian spoke on Epiphany meaning a church feast on Jan. 6 to commemorate the showing of Christ to the wise men. The hymn of response was, "When Jesus Comes to be Baptized." Nancy Jardin gave a reading on a Christmas pageant which had a lot of humour in it. Larry Harper and Ken Procter took up the offering which was dedicated. The closing hymn "Will You Come and See the Light" and the benediction and blessing concluded the morning worship service. Congratulations to Shawn and Katie Cottrill. Shawn and Katie travelled to Charlotte, North Carolina to compete in a World Curling Tour Mixed Doubles Bonspiel from Dec. 29-31. There were 24 teams participating from the U.S. and Canada. They were undefeated in round- robin play, winning all three of their games, which qualified them to play in the championship round. They continued their winning ways winning their quarter -final, then semi-final games then on the championship game where they were again victorious, coming home with the championship trophy and the first -place cash payout. While they were in Charlotte they visited with friends of the family, Jileesa (Mali) and Jonathon Claridge. They now have their eyes set on the Ontario Provincial Championship and Canadian National Championship. The community congratulates them and wishes them luck for the rest of the season. Bill and Muriel Coultes welcomed their family home for an early Christmas celebration on Saturday, Dec. 23. Over the years their family has grown but everyone made it home, except Jeremy in Fort McMurray.
