The final event for the Blyth 140th
committee — a special celebration
held on the afternoon of New Year's
Eve day — was a huge success
according to organizers.
The Blyth 140th Committee, a
sub -committee of the Blyth Business
Improvement Area (BIA), presented
its final report on the event at the
BIA's Jan. 3 meeting.
"The event was outstanding,"
committee chair Crystal Taylor said.
"We had a great turnout"
Taylor said the events of the day,

The big day
The final event of the Blyth 140th committee was held the afternoon of New Year's Eve and
featured free skating, fireworks, a Christmas tree burning, a bonfire and dog sled
demonstrations like the one being run by Luke Siertsema above. After the event, the
committee decided to donate to several local groups who helped make the event possible
before turning over the majority of any remaining funds to the Blyth Lions Club for ongoing
community projects. (Quinn Talbot photo)

Happy birthday to Marion Young
who celebrates Jan. 11 and Grant
Sparling, Jan. 13.
Two-Toonie Tuesday is on
Tuesday, Jan. 16 at Trinity Anglican
Church Hall from 11:30 a.m. until
12:30 p.m. Come out and enjoy the
delicious food and fellowship.
Monday was the first mild day that
we have had in a long time. It seems
like forever, but I guess it is only
nicely into January and this is maybe
our January thaw that will settle the
snow from blowing around.
Don't forget to come out and play
shoot at the Blyth United Church
auditorium every other Tuesday.
The next shoot party will be held
Jan. 23. Doors open at 12:30 p.m.
and cards begin at 1 p.m. Come out
and join in the fun.
If you don't know how to play,
there will be people there to
teach you.

Cousins, a Christmas tree burning,
bonfire and a free skate at the arena,
were well attended. She also said
the Blyth Lions, which operated its
food booth at the Blyth campground
during the event, reported a
successful turnout.
"The Lions said they didn't care if
they broke even, but I believe they
did," Taylor said. "They sold 15
dozen hot dogs by donation"
Taylor said the dog sled race
demonstrations were also well
attended with more than 100 people
watching one of the two hour-long
events at the celebration.
Snowshoeing was also offered by
the Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority (MVCA).
By far the best attended event was
the fireworks, Taylor said, which
brought out approximately 400
visitors.
Taylor reported the expenses for
the events which included
approximately $1,900 for the
fireworks, prizes for the wacky hat
competition, entertainment and
insurance for the dog sled racing.
Due to fundraising through local
sponsors, the event turned a profit,
some of which will be donated to the
Blyth Lions Club for ongoing
projects at Blyth Lions Park.
Taylor, however, proposed several
donations to parties involved in the
celebration including $100 to the
MVCA to help cover rental costs for
the snowshoes, $100 each to the
Blyth Firefighters Associations and
Wingham Firefighters Association
who helped with the Christmas tree
burning and the fireworks and $50 to
a charity of choice on behalf of Mike
and Luke Siertsema who ran the dog
sled demonstrations.
"The bulk of whatever is left
should be donated to the Blyth Lions
Club," Taylor said, adding that the
club was considering carrying on the
tradition of the committee in
creating an event near New Year's
Eve.

After 40 years on Blyth's main street, Scrimgeour's Food Market is sold
and it is now time to express our sincere thanks to everyone who
supported us back in the Blyth Meat Market days and Scrimgeour's
Food Market. Over the years we have had a great relationship with
restaurants, church groups, service clubs, the Huron Pioneer Threshers,
Legions, etc., not only from Blyth but from surrounding communities as
well. We appreciated it very much. During those years we have had
many staff members who have worked very hard for us and have been
very devoted, we have been one big family. Also thanks to everyone who
has supported our children and grandchildren in fundraising events.
Also many thanks to our suppliers for their support. It is all appreciated.
We wish everyone a happy new year and good health.

Lord, how can we know the way?
(J.R. Miller, "Evening Thoughts" 1907)
Thomas said to Him, "Lord, how can we know the way?"
Jesus said to him, "7 am the way" John 14:5-6
This is the first day of a new year. We are setting out on a journey of
which we can have no knowledge in advance. The road is one on which
we never have gone hitherto. We know not what any day will have for
what our duties will be,
what burdens shall be laid upon us,
what sorrows we shall have to endure,
what battles we shall have to fight.
We cannot see one step before us! How can we know the way?
As we sit in the quiet, this first evening, and ask the question, we hear an
answer which is full of comfort. Jesus says to us, "1 amthe way!"
All we shall have to do, therefore, will be to follow Jesus. He has made a
way through this dark world for us. He has gone over all the journey and
opened a road for us at great cost. He went over the way Himself --we
shall find His shoe -prints at every step.
He has a definite way for each one of us. Every mile of the journey He
has chosen --and every place where I pitch my tent He has selected for
me!
"Leaving you an example, so that you should follow in His steps!" 1 Peter
