Local families remembered during holiday season

WALTON

We hope you all had a wonderful
Christmas season and time with your
family. The excitement on the faces
of little children and smiles of joy
from gifts received and the fun of
families getting together is what the
holidays are all about. Food, food
and more food will have been
consumed and now everyone will be
on diets!
The Christmas season was not a
season of happiness for some
families in our area. We offer our
condolences to Murray and Olene
Dennis and family on the passing of
Murray's sister Elsie McSpadden of
Norwich. They also had the sadness
of the passing of Olene's brother-in-
law, Lloyd Beuermann. Our
sympathies to the Dennis family and
Marion Godkin on the loss to their
families.
It was a difficult Christmas for the
Stephenson family with Dave
Stephenson in hospital. Dave
suffered injuries in an accident the
week before Christmas and was in a
Hamilton hospital. Although it is a
difficult time, Dave is healing
and is back closer to home in
Seaforth Hospital for the start of the
new year.
Our sympathies are extended to
the Veitch family on the passing of
Rob Veitch. The loss of one so
young is always a difficult situation.
He will be missed by his wife Erin
and children Evan and Karsyn. Rob
is the son of Ross Veitch, formerly of
Grey Township, and son-in-law of
Ron and Marg Cook of Belgrave.
Rob grew up on the dairy farm and
went to school at the former Grey
Central Public School and will be
remembered by many of his former
school friends, neighbours and
friends as a wonderful young man.
Our sympathies to all.
Jack McLachan had a slower
Christmas this year as well, as he is
recovering from injuries sustained
from an accident in the bush.
The North Line has changed a
little this past month as Neil and
Lorretta Dolmage have moved to
Seaforth after selling the farm this
fall. We wish them well in their new
surroundings.
There have been other changes in
Walton with the sale of the Hackwell
home. New owners are busy
renovating and we will wait to see
who the new folks are when they are
ready to move in.
The Walton Women's Institute
celebrated the Christmas season
with a Christmas dinner at the
Walton Inn. Enjoying the turkey
dinner were Marjory Humphries,
Brenda Perrie, Margaret Mclnroy,
Ruth Axtmann and Helen Craig.
They followed the meal with their
final meeting of 2017.
The Walton Inn had a busy
breakfast time on the last day of
business in 2017. They held a free
draw and lucky winners were
Margaret Mclnroy, Marjory
Humphries and B.J. DeJong. It was a

Funds not earmarked for Brussels

about money being injected into the
general reserve, saying that funds in
the general reserve tend to get
"washed away" whereas when
money is earmarked for a specific
project, it ensures it will be spent
there, especially with a municipal
election in the fall.
Marshall said that the money
could be set aside for a project, but
for Huron East, not just in Brussels.
Blaney also contested that if a
large amount of money were to be
set aside for one project, like the
community centre, the municipality
could actually get something done.
A series of small projects around the
community, he said, could make
little impact compared to a lot of
funding provided to the focal point
of the community.
Knight said there was more to the
decision than just choosing the best
place for the money. He said that the
loss of the school and the toll it took
on Brussels was also considered.
"Losing the school was a major
blow to the community," Knight
said, adding that he hoped the funds
might help to improve things in
Brussels.
Fisher said it's important to
present a united front when it comes
to the municipality. If council truly
wants people to believe that Huron
East is one, united municipality, then
it can't present itself as five different
wards.
Council voted to go against the
two recommendations and place
both pockets of funding into the
general reserve.
In other year-to-date financial
business, council opted to move
Morris-Turnberry's fire department
buy -in to the municipality's general
fund equipment reserve for future
use by the fire and public works
departments.
The municipality's capital buy -in
to the department was $176,771.
Now, with the Brussels Fire
Department needing a new truck,
councillors said that the funds could
be used to pay for that purchase in
2018.
The general fund equipment
reserve was established in 2002 with
an allocation of $750,000 and, at the
beginning of 2017, the reserve was
in a deficit position of $32,487.
Michiels also recommended that
the allocation for the condenser
replacement at the Brussels, Morris
and Grey Community Centre be
allocated to reserves. The
recommendation came from the
centre's committee.
The allocation provided for the
replacement was $60,000 and the
Huron East portion of the allocation
is being provided by the St.
Columban Wind vibrancy fund.
Michiels, in her report, said that
the request for proposals will close
this month and that the replacement
will most likely take place in
March.
Council also voted to move the ice
resurfacer allocation of $80,000
along with the $10,000 donation
from the Seaforth Trust to reserves
for the Seaforth and District
Community Centre.
Huron East's $80,000 allocation
came from the Northland Power
vibrancy fund. The delivery of the
ice resurfacer will not take place
until May, so the funds will be
transferred to the centre's reserves to
be used in 2018.
All of the moves, Michiels said in
her report, represented a shift of over
$825,000 to various reserves for use
in 2018.
great way for them to start off the
Christmas season.
The Walton corner was extra busy
with a RIDE program being set up
from 9-10 a.m. The six cruisers and
eight officers were kept busy with a
ton of traffic coming into Walton,
but the job was made "wanner"
with the free coffee taken to
them by Graeme Craig of the Walton
Inn.
The Walton Hall was busy on
Saturday before Christmas with the
Johnston family gathering for a get-
together. It was just a social time of
coffee and muffins and treats for a
few hours during the late morning
and afternoon. The hosts were Terry
and Teresa Johnston. Neil and Marie
McGavin helped out with opening
and closing the hall.
The Walton Hall was the venue for
the Darlow Christmas gathering on
Boxing Day. The family enjoyed
food, fun and a wonderful visit with
family.
Our family gathered on Christmas
Day at our house and unfortunately
it was a shorter day than usual. A
couple of children feeling under the
weather had two families going
home early. The way the weather
was it was just as well.
The weather on Christmas Day
and Boxing Day at times was a
rather blustery affair. There were
times it looked great, sun shining
and then it would start to snow and
the strong winds blow and it was
nasty again. We hope all were able to
travel safely and see their families
over the Christmas holidays.
Our sympathies are extended to
Paul and Carolyn Somerville on the
passing of his sister Sharon Jeffrey.
She will be missed by her husband
Larry and children Melaine and
Todd and many extended family.
Our condolences to all.
Our sympathies are extended to
the family of the late Dorothy Baker.
She will be missed by her children
Sheila, Doris, Betty Jean and Ed and
their families. Our condolences to
all.
Remember the school children are
home for another week, so watch for
them out and about. New Christmas
sleds or playing road hockey will
have children outside.
Celebrating birthdays this
Christmas season include Reagan
Blair, Michelle Blake, Anne Curreri,
Kerry Blake Dale, Alex Deitner,
Mark Gillis, Rob Dionne, Alaina

Audrey Hackwell and Aubrey
McClure. We ring in 2018 with new
year babies Dave Linton, Frank
Schimanski, Claire Mitchell, Brent
Melady, Alexandria Shahshahani
and Brayden Shortreed celebrating
followed by Michael Craig and Don
Nolan. Happy birthday to all!
