New year a time to
reflect, look forward
A NOTE FROM BETTY
Bidding adieu
For `Cinnamon' Jim, right, and his wife Lois, not shown, the end of their business, Cinnamon
Jim's, came not with a whimper but with as much beautiful music, merrymaking and well-
wishing as could be mustered on Dec. 30 in the Upper Deck, the performance space above
the restaurant and coffee shop. The special farewell event was called "The Last Polka", an
homage to Canadian -American rock group The Band's final performance called "The Last
Waltz". (Shawn Loughlin photo)

Christmas events held at Branch
By Jo -Ann McDonald
We hope all had a Merry
Christmas and Happy New Year. We
look forward to seeing everyone
back around the Brussels Legion
Branch in 2018. The Branch will be
back into the swing of things this
weekend with cards, darts and
dancing.
Time to get used to writing 2018. I
have had to correct from 2017 a few
times already. We hope everyone
had a great Christmas and Happy
New Year.
Full circle
Jim Armstrong was the first customer at Cinnamon Jim's
when the Brussels business opened more than a decade
ago and received the last cup of coffee when `Cinnamon'
Jim, left, and Lois Lee closed up shop just before 2017
ended on Dec. 30. The closing was marked by a special
concert in The Upper Deck, the performance space above
the restaurant and coffee shop. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
The Branch catering group fed the
Brussels Cadet Corp 2967 for a
Christmas dinner for their Last
meeting of the 2017 year. The 25
Cadets, parents, siblings, special
guests and officers gathered for
the roast beef dinner on the
Tuesday before Christmas. They
enjoyed the meal and special
presentations during the evening.
Branch caterers included Linda
Bird, Deb Ross, Jo -Ann and
Rick McDonald, Deb Cann and
Judy Lee for the night. That was
the last catering event for the 2017
year and a very busy fall. Thanks to
all!
The Thursday night dart league
had a great bunch of darters out for
the Christmas fun night.They played
their regular games. Winners were:
first, Daisy Wong Schmidt and
Sandra Josling Brown; second,
Penny Reynolds, Catrina Josling and
John Stadelmann; high shots, Sandra
-140, Sheron Stadelmann - 132 and
Roger McHardy - 124. The group
then went into playing the fun
Christmas games of darts starting
with regular 501, Rudolph Nose,
regular 501, Christmas Follies,
Dashing through the Snow and
regular 501.
They enjoyed lots of snacks
and laughs during the evening of
fun. Darts will resume in the new
year.

What a wonderful time of the year,
hum along, the words just may come
to you.
The week between Christmas day
and New Year's day is special. The
pressure is off, Santa Claus really
did come, the groceries are bought
and, oh yes, mostly eaten, presents
have dispersed and many folks have
the week off to do as they will. So
pop -in visits are quite acceptable, as
the state of the house is determined
by the last group of company, so no
pressure. As I write this, it's the
fourth day of Christmas, so lots of
fun time left.
Christmas is the time to gather
with family and friends to take stock
of life and make plans for the future.
Lots of parties and gathering
happened with a variety of
participants, at many places, doing
many things. Each one is special to
the folks involved. Food is often a
main event and that too is a
family/friend choice. I hope you had
your fill of your favourites.
As life moves along, changes are
noted. As the grandparents of the
clan, it's fascinating to watch the
bodies grow and the minds develop.
Conversations take on a new depth
as they grow and share their
experiences. Our job is to listen,
comment and encourage them to see
the world as a place for adventure
and learning. With FaceTime, Phil,
Lauren and Hark got into the
conversations as well. Andrew flew
in from Halifax for a wee visit, so all
was well in our world. 011 yes, it's a
wonderful world.
One of my favourite images is the
drawing of Santa Claus kneeling at
the manger. The drawing was in the
Toronto Star this week reminding
me of the love, acceptance,
generosity and humbleness
projected through this blessed time.
Yes, we need Christmas every year.
Life seems to be on high at this
time, so for those with loss and
sorrow heavy on their minds, these
festive days can be tough. Life is.
Details of grief don't change but the
world belongs to all of us. Shared
space is just that, shared space, so
gathering should happen with
consideration from all involved. Be
mindful of the needs of others as this
happy time continues into 2018.
The year in review will be
happening in the days and weeks
ahead. The good, the bad and the

ugly will all need to be noted. This is
also the time to dream, to dream of
the best things that could happen
and then start the plans to try to hit
the goal - be that home or church or
community.
My motto for 2018 is going to be
"don't get your tinsel in a tangle".
You just have to smile when you say
that to yourself.
Eat well, take a walk or exercise,
breathe deep and wash your hands
well and often and may 2018 be a
blessing for you.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
