CANADIANS WILL
SUPPORT TREK,
Five thousand Doulthoborti• have decided' that during 'Um coming winter
ehe government of Canada must be re-
sponsible for their maintenance. Ron.
Clifford Sifton has so ()item declared
these peon.le to be the acme of our itn-
Migration importations that the an,
nouncetuant ' is sornevcrhat startling-,
Ille• Conservative party was denounc-
ed for daring to impeach the 'useful-
ness of these settlers, who' were ber-
alded as a, peopk o .priceless value in
opening up a country where other rac-
• es would starve. Dut the delightful
picture is shattered end it is up to the
people of Canada, to support the
thousands, for the departure of whom
Russia had reason to thank Provid-
ence. Worthless in their own eountty,
the Doukhobors promise to be. a
greater nuisance here. Five' thousand
Canadians from the United States
might have occupied the places- of -the
undesirable Doukhobors had the
money spent in assisting the latter
been devoted to encouraging •the for --
/tier to return to their native land.
Canada is only beginning to reap the:
harvest of the ill-advised immigra-
tion policy ot the present admiiiistra-,
tior.. It is significant that the smith-
orities do not care to diseues• the
matter.
CANADIAN WHEAT OSTRACIZED.
Germany is more emphatic than ev-
er in her determination • to exclude
Canadian grain from her Markets.
Orders have been issued for the strict-
er observance of the discriminatory
tariff of 16 cents per bushel again•st
our cereals. As a result Canadian
grain has ceased to figure to any
appreciable extent in ,supplying_ Ger-
many's needs. The United States
farmer, on the other hand, is making
rapid gains in his grain sales to the
Germans, the 16c advantage dbing for
him what "mutual preference" would
accomplish for Canadians in the Brit-,
ish market. The alleged preference.
given to British vette in, our own tar-
iff was the cause of German hostility,
towards oar grain. And the worst of
it is that white our farmers are unab-
le to escape the noxious grain tax,
German manufacturers are actually
making money by aVailing tliernselVes
of the privilege of the Dritish prefer-
ence and supplying our home Markets
with goods that should be produced'
by our own ntanufacturers. So far as
it is known Sir Wilfrid Laurier '..and
his associates, during their Stay in
England, did not exercise themsehres
in regard to the injustice done our
farmers by Germany. According to
the official reports only &too bushels
of Canadian wheat was iinported in-
to Germany during the year ending
June 3oth, 1902, a falling off of tens
of thousands of bushels.
WHAT ABOUT THIS DEAL
The Dominion trod' and Steel COM-
pany succeeded last winter in inducing
the Nova Scotia, Legislature to pass'
an act which enabled the, company to
pay a dividend out of their eapital.
The legislation sought was of such a
remarkable character that the Nova
0 Seotians hesitated to colleted. to
its passage. Then the Liberal cabinet
at Ottawa was called itpon to use .its
influence and the result was highly
satisfactory. The bill went through,
the dividend was declared and Domin-
ion lion and Steel stocks went up.
Those ftrtunate enough to hold :tic&
made money and among them, it is
alleged, were some cabinet iiiinis-
ters whose zeal placed the cOrripany'
possession of the important legisla-
tion. It would be 01 very great niter-.
est to the public if a statement were
made giving the details of the Ar-
rangement ; the names of the mittis-
ters who made the money ; and the a-
mount made by each.
