The value of light signals to redin-
late rrad traffic was discussed at LYa
transport commission's meeting when
he virrpreaident of the Royal Auto-
motive Club, declared that the em-
ployment of red lights was almost
useless, as 25 per cent of niece are
practically color blind. The use et the
red light in connection with motor
ears should he abolished. It waa an
inheritance from the railway mem-
panies. It was preferable to signal
by means of form or shape mats
than by color. If the triangle was a
danger sign there was no need for it
to he red, The chairman, asked the
speaker why be referred to men mo-
torists only. "Because," he replied,
amid laughter, "no woman is color
blind. Color blindness 1s a thing the
women can transmit, but do net oaf -
ter trona themselves."

Monument to a Pugilist.

posing monument erected by Ills
friends and admirers to a prizefight-
er, one John Jackson, champion of
England, who was known in the an-
nals of the prize ring by the soubri-
quet of "Gentleman Jackson." It con-
sists of a massive altar tomb, with
figures of athletes, and hears a leng-
thy inscription setting forth the de -
I ceased pugilist's many claims to die-
. Unction. These euloglums were not
III -deserved, for Jackson was a friend
and associate of Lord Byron, who
described him as "the finest -formed
man In Europe"; he was well edu-
cated, and was received on equal
terns by many well-known leaders of
society.

stone, with its carved inscription, is
