Rev. F. J. Steen, in his sermon in
Christ Church Cathedral, Montreal, 012
Sunday "expressed his conviction that
the souls of the departed might be bene-
-fitted by the prayers of timeeon earth.
He also expressed his belief that the
condition of those who have reached
the intermediate -state iniligebe greatly
different from their present coodition
in the land of departed epirits. He
further referred to the old idea that,
bell was a piece of literal fire. With
this view he said he could not
agree. It was a place of 'suffering
and torment, but to bis mind the sue-
fering was to a great extent mental,
and not physicel. Hell, however, was
not the final abode of the' tiammed, and
a soul puttering torment therein might

Rev Mr Greene, a preacher at Find-
ley's Lake. Pa., took his congregation
to.task a few Sundays ago because the
members %ere not, in his •opinion, giv.
ing suitable support to church work.
The reverend gentleman mentioned by
WIMP several of those wiener he re-
garded aa at fault, but was injudicious
, enough to include Edit Boerninn
among the lot. '"Why," said the
preacher, "Mr Buerrnan rtiln paid a
dollar toward my supped." The edit.
or retorted. "It was deer at the price."
and Mr Greene thereupon learned that
it is dangerous to rnepkey with the
