AN OLD RESIDENT. -Rachael, relict
of the late John MeLeod, whose death
occurred on Thursday of lest week,
had reached the goad old age of oinety-
one ysars. • The deceased was formerly
• a resident of Seaforth for many year,
but lived the last ten years of her life
in Goderich. The interment was made
in Maitland cemetery.
ASSESSI/Dirr.-The roll shows a
considerable increase over last yea,r'e
assessment, but the population which
is 4033 is a decrease of 27. Other
figures are: -Beal property, $11277,570;
personal $57,8M ; taxable Income,
$44,700; total, $1,380,070; children be-
tween 5 and 21 years, 961; children be-
tween 5 aud 16 years, 71»; births, 34;
deaths, 38; doge, 157 ; cattle, 107;

increase in the total assessment is
3181,670 of which $75,000 is an increase

Holmes vs. Town of Etoderich which
was tried try Judge Robertson without
a jury at the last assizes in Godertch.
The action was to restrain defendants
from discounting or in any way deal-
ing with a promissory note for $2,500,

funds for security for the appeal to
the Supreme Court of Ceded& in the
former action of Holmes vs Town of
Goderich, and for delivery un of note

THE LATE N.. fit. Hamesonn,-At
Oakville on the ark Of May, Matthew
IL Hammond dted, ip . his 41st year,
lifter suffering from the effects of . an
operation in St Michael's hospital,
Toronto, for strangulated hernia. He
was the eldest son of the late Jemee
Hammond, of the 13th con., of Arran.
He was educated at Collingwood col-
legiate institote, after which he taught
school near' Hepworth- - where -he
married the' only daughter of Mr
James .Livingston, of Arnabel. He
then secured a situation with the
Grand Trunk railway. His first
station vvae Kipper', then he Was pro -
mated to Blyth where he remained
several years, being finally promoted
to Oakville where be died. He leaves
a wife and eight children to mourn the
loss of a devoted husband and father.
He was buried at Taxa cemetery by the
Feee Masers's.

Henderson, now deceased, was called and
inducted; at the end of two years he accept-

July 8; 1895, and on May 23, 1899, he as
