of the shrewdest and most successful
business men in the South Riding,
was in town on Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Alf.Barge were in Goder•
ich yesterday attending the wedding
of Mise Mamie Young, daughter of
Mr. Wm. Young, formerly Clinton,
Mr, A. W. Redmond, of Sanilac
county, Mich., who with his better
half is visiting old friends and rela-
tives in their native township of
Stanley, was in town on Saturday
accompanied by Mr. J. H. Parke of
Blake. The Redmond. were among
the first families in Stanley quarter
of a century ago but longeincesettled
in Michigan where they have prosper-
ed and multiplied. It is twenty years
since Mr. Redmond last visited Clin-
ton, his mission on that occasion be
ing to procure a marriage licenee,and
after the tying of the nuptial knot he
returned with his bride to Michigan
where he had located the year pre-
vious. During these two decades
fortune has heen kind to them and in
Sanilac the Redmond and Walkers
have become so numerous and in-
fluential that the annual family
Fi thering is a hig affair. Next year
thif rally Will be held at Varna. They
grow sugar beets in Mr. Redmond's
county where the farmers consider
them the most profitable crop they
can raise. The yield range, from
fifteen to twenty and sometimes
thirty tons to the acre, according to
the soil and the amount of work be-
stowed upon it. The price paid is
S14.50 per ton for twelve per
cent beets with an iaerease of 88h
cents for each additional par cent,
over the standard, Present crops
and prices are yielding the Mich-
igen farmers a big profit so that with

nursing a typhoid feyer patient in

proving as rapidly as her many friends I
would desire and hope for. (

with his brother at Kincardine. _
Another of the pioneers bas gone to 1
rest in the person of Mr. Wesley Far-
rier. Deceased was born in the county
of Halton in 1825, and moved to West
Wawanosb about forty years ago. By
industry he made a comfortable home
for himself. He was a consistent mem-
her of the Methodist church for fifty
years and a kind husband and devoted
father. He leaves a loving, wife, two
sons, and one daughter to mourn their
loss.
The new English church in St. Hol
ens was opened on Sunday the kith of
Dec., the re -opening services being a
grand success.' Rev. R. J. Shaw of
Woodstock conducted the service
which was much appreciated. There
was a large attendauco at all the ser-
vices. The sacred concert on Monday
evening was also largely attended.
The collections on Sunday amounted
to eighty nine dollars and the free Will
offering on 'Monday evening to eighty
dollars. We •congratulat3 the manag-
ers on their success.
Miss Annie Clark bad a very success-•
tul examination on Friday last.
