There are yet many residents of this
township who are well advanced in
years, but of the original pioneers, the
men who obtained the deed of their
farms from the Canada, Company, very
few remain. Indeed, in talking the
matter over the other day with Mr,
Thos Keyes of Vartut, who took up land
here forty-six years ago, he could
nanle only four, as follows John Mc -
02 the Baytield Road, James
Logan of the 5th con., Charles Logan
and George Anderson of the Parr Line,
The latter tier, were born in the same
year, 1818, all four are natives of
Scotland and are' industrious and God-
fearing men, much respected by their
neighbors and a wide, circle of relatives

THE Oincon.Y Knig.--For very many
years Air. Thomas Ward ha,s been
locally known as the 'Chicory King
from the fact that he was the only cure
to grow chicory in this part of Ontario.
He is a native of Yorkshire. but Came
to Canada at an early age and lived in
the county of Peellor some time. It
was there he first began to grow
chicory and onanoving to Varna over
two score years Binde be began to culti-
vate it here, also. Some 'seasons he
has had as many as twenty acres under
cultivation but as the price fell the
acres deereased until now he has
only six acres of it. M. Ward has a
building, in which the chicory is cut,
dried and bagged, ready for shipment
to the wholesalers. It ismo doubt, welt
known that ehicory is used to cheapen
the price of coffee and at the same time
make a better profit for the dealer.
The adulteration doesn't do the coffee
drinker any hartn,though hewould, no
doubt, prefer the genuine artiele
to the mile tu resi f he knew the difference.
Whatis known AS dandelion coffee is
in reality chicory coffee. The only
other person to grow the root in this
'township was a brother-in-law of Mr.
Ward's, a Mr. Walker of the Brown.
son Line, who died some years ago,and
his boyseoid the oil homestead and
moved ont'West. Mr,Ward has prosper.
ed as three hundred acres of good land
would indicate. The farm upon which
the, chicory is now beittg cultivated IS
managed by his son John, a stalwart
and handsothe young man who some
months ago selected as his life partnera
handsome and popular young lady of
Clinton, bliss Libbie Wheatley. Re
has a fine place and all the indications
point to a happy and prosperous life,

ing said there were too many Ions

that our village should be as popular
as possible with viiitors, •
The managers of Our Pall Fair will,
no doubt, soon be booming it. There
ie no reason why it should not draw
as many visitors as any Fair in the
county, all that is needed being a little'
