The 'shipments of wheat from the port emounted to 13,045,000 bushels as compared with 11,168,000 bushels a year ago. The reas- ons for this discrepancy have already been given. Last year the shipments of oats from Montreal to foreign emits amounted to 4,934,000 loushels, while this year the shipments were 2,453,000 bushels. Canadian railways last year hauled three times the amount of flour, six titnes the lumber, and ten times- manufactured goods that theY did in 1880. Canada's aggregate exports and lire ports were for the last year, ending June last, $73 per head of population whilst those ofthe United States were under $29. In part expla, nationet may be said that the people of the United States are enormous contra mere of their own stuffs, and are at the same time a manufacturing nation, largely, as it were, self-contained. The Canadian exports have, during the part seven years exceeded the im- por ts in every year excepting 1899, and the aggregate excess in these seven years has been about $53,000,000. In examining the details ot these exports, we find that nearly the whole is com- prised of the natural products of the country. Since 1880 t e u 'cultural exports have increas ly s 25 per cent„ but in fish and exp rt trade has about deubled, whilst rn manufactured goods it is two and a half times, and in mining products it is nine times as great. As illustrating wbeee the business re- lations of the merchants .are relatively more active, and where intercommuni- cation between families is frequent, each resident of British Co'umbia wrote last year on the average 56 let- ters, eachresident in Ontario 53, in Manitoba and the Territories 45, in New Bruns wick 38, in Nova Scotia 31, in Quebec 28 and in Prince Edward Is- land 19. The Privy Council has decided that the action of Manitoba, in passing a prohibitory law, is constitutional,a de- rision thit..quite naturally gives great satisfaction to temperance people, who 'will endeavor to have the law put in- to opei ation in that province as soon as tbe pi esent liceese system runs out, which is in May next. And the decision will be far-reaching in its effect, tor it means that every ovince has the same power as Man- itoba. Neatly all those who have expressed any opinion cn the subject, agree that Ontario must be asked to pass a similar law. Prominent temperance men be. Belie that the government is pledged to do so, and there is not the slightest doubt but that a delegation will short- ly interview the Prernierfor that p ur- pose, who so far has declined to express an opinion on the matter. If the people want probibiteon in this Province they will have it. The ' Conservative papers are after Hon Mr BOss, because they believe they have bim in a trap; yet the very same pa- pers will turn around to-17°0nm and denounce him as a "political trickster," scateringonly for votes,' Should he adopt this as a plank in his platform. Until the matter has been considered by the Cabluet it is not much use dis- cussing it or reviewing the prose'and i , cons. but our own opinion s that a • government which will adopt prohibi- tion, in any province outside of Que. bec, would eweep the country. See Poultry, That money continues to be made in Canada is shown by the increase of nearly $64,000,000,or about 25 per cent., in the chartered bank deposits in the two years and two months ending October 1901. rwenty-five years ago even Ontario municipalities found it sometimes diffl. cult to float their debentures bearing per cent., and for many years the chief outlet was in Scotland and England; now thc same municipalities float their leans on a 4 per cent. basis, or under that, and their bonds are eagerly ab- sorbed within this country. Further, we are now financing our own Indus- trial undertakings amongOur own peo- ple, instead of, as formerly, looking to Great Britain and ,tbe United States for the capital required. With the in- creashig establishment of great indus- trial works our ambitiops and push- ing young men who have hitherto gone to the United States in pearch of 'out- lets for their energy will now find time cutlets in increasing numbers at home, It may be said that accompanying these fieures ebould be such explaa- tions as that the railway returns in- clude 'United States traffic, that the ex. ports embrace sorne° western States products, and that bank deposits may cover some deposits loaned by the banks, and again deposited by the bor- rower, but whatev r force such expla- nations may have, the fact still re- mains that the figures furnish ample evidence of greatly bacreased business' and wealth in Canada. And we appear to beliving longer. The returns for 1901 are not yet pub- lished, but the number Who in Canada lived to the age of 60 years and uPwards was in proportion to the total papilla- tionein 1851, 1 in 27.07 ; in 1861, 1 in 22.• 2; in 1871, I in 19,6 ; in 1881, 1 in 15.8; in 1892, 1 in 14.25. The result has no doubt in part, been brought about by the diminished immigration of recent tOwnehip. The animal has since died and the owner has made a demand on Morris Council for 0105, the value he placed on it. As F. A. Edwards was goipg from Brucefield to Bayfield recently his horse became ill and fell on the road near Varna, The -animal was got to a eitable and a veterinary tient for,. who prounced it paralysie. The horse Is not likely to recover. Word has been received of the death of John Somerville on Nov lst,in Jack. eon, Missouri. Deceased was a former teacher in Woodstock grammar school and is a bachelor. He was an uncle of Messrs James and Archibald Somer- ville, of McKillop, and Mr Wm Somer- ville, of Seaforth. Robt L Peddie, who a couple of years ago wasen business in Seaforth for a time, committed suicide on Thursday When the Canadian farmers under- stand fattening poultry as well as they now understand the feeding of cattle and hogs -and that time is not far off -the exports to Britain will be enor- . mous. Shippers report that Canada 'produces the best poultry in the world, but it has not been well handled in the, past, hence the profit has been smaller than it should have been. -Hamilton Times. We know of a consignmenc of chiek- ens, fattened expressly for the English market, which netted, above expenes, $1.16 per pair, and were recently in formed of a shipment made, which it IREDI expected, would sell in the old Country market, at $1.75 per pair, Can- adian fowl ordinarily, will only drese an average of 21 and 3elbeacb,but Eng- lish consumess want a fowl that will go from 5 lbs upwards. If Canadians will raise this class of fowl, they can sell all they like to produce, el good prices. The following from the Ottawa corres- pondence of Friday's Globe, bears out this ;- The Department of Agriculture has forwarded another lot of specially fat- tened chickens in cold storage to Liver- pool thia week. This lot was from yaticrus fattening stations and contain- ead 2,492 chickens. Returns have just been reeeieed regarding the first ship - 'Mont of fattened ehickena sent by thef derailment this season. These were fattened at the poultry fattening sta- tion at Bondville, Quebec. They were geld in Liverpool, wholesale, at four- teen cents per pound, and the net re - tarns were equal to 01.31 cents per pair of chickens at Montreal. Professor Bober tson says the export trade in fat- tened chickens is bound to bectme very great, Mid the demand in Canadian Merlotti will also greatly increase as Moon as consumers know the very sup- erior (plenty of the fattened chickens, and the high peecentage of edible por- tion itf each bird.
