It is scarcely four years since the first fire took place, and ilde Doherty, with characteristie enter prise, had erected the beautiful build - Inge shown in the above cut. They were -imposed to be fire -proof, at least so far as with buildings could be, being stieciellY conetructed with that end in view; a -consPetent. night watch was kept, and a thorough system of water works provided for - emergency. But notwithstanding all these safeguards, fire has again been their misfortune. Saturday evening at 10 o'clock. loin Foster, night watchman, made his rounds.and found everything all safe. His duty, is to go around every hour, and at 11 o'clock, just as he was coining out of the engine house to make his round, he saw a light on the south side of Machinery Hell (which contained the machine, case, key and finishing departments) and thought it was the grain elevator' near the railroad track; aa he ran around the east end of the building (the one With the Doherty sign on it in the cut) he was ,atna, zed to see Barnes bursting' from a window in the upper story. aboutthe middle of the building. He at once sounded the fac- tory whistle, and the town' fire alarm ringing soon brought a crowd. Lines of hose were quickly attached to the factory hydrants, but. the, fire gained -headway, in spite of the heroic efforts* made to cheek it. The town Bre engine was early on hand, but was for a tune rendered useless by a check valve breaking; when. it did get to work which, unfortunately was not for some time, it threw a heavy Abeam ot water that saved the lower part of the build- ing from complete destruction. A solid brick wall, a foot thick, runs through both stories, and separates the machine room up -stairs from the Finishing Room and Varnish Parlor, in the lat. ler were stored an immense stock which it was hoped could b saved, but the fire managed to make its way into , the Finishing Room, and d startled the large stock here.
