A .conference MLR held at Glasgow
last week to consider whether steps
should be taken or not for the retrieval
of the restrictions affecting Canadian
cattle. It was unanimously agreed
that the restriction e were no lonet'
necessary and ought to be removed.
Certain discrepancies may -be rioted
in the census figures. In the ten yeers
our population has gained 104 per
cent. upon the figures of 1891. The
number of families has increased 13 1
per cent.,over the 1891 figured, and the
dwelling houses have increases by 14.7
per cent. It is singular that the houses
and the families should increase so
much more rapidly than the iedivi-
duals who comprise those families and
inhabit those houses.-Teronto Globe.

low figures of the census to protection:
"From 1861 to 1881; pericd of low re

the rate it does now. Years of com-

bankruptcies and soup kitchen F,

the people to turn oat of power a Lib-

Government which offered a high tariff

in Canada's population was 16 per cent.
much larger than it has been since. In
the following ten years, the policy or
protection beim', in force, the increase
in people was 12 per cent. Now, for
ten years under the fuller fruition of
protection, the rate drops to 10i pec
