ARBOR DAT. -As last Friday was
Arbor day, our school, No, 10,13ayfield
Line, celebrated, it as wiled. The teach -a
er, with the Rid of e. very few of the
scholars, made a little noticeable im
provement, while the majority of the
pupils remained at home. Parents
having the idea that their children
should not help in the improvement of
the surroundings of school premises
are greatly mistaken. They seem to
ignore the moral and social benefits
which the day possesses. What is the
1190 of any dominie pre -arranging plans
for a euitable obseryance when tne
purents are so indisposed. Parents you
are making a bad mistake. Help and
encourage your .teacher that he may
take an interest in your children, and
you will undoubtedly profit according --
1y, White, therefore, it is the duty of
parents to see that their children are
at school on that day,it is also the duty
of.a, school board to provide for the
cleaning of the school, the blackening
of the stcve and attending to a few
needed repairs beforehand so that all
within the echoolhousent least may be
as attractive as possible. • What is
there in uncleanliness to elevate the
tastes or raise .the morals of young
pupils?

Inar.-,Another and the tnost disas-
trous fire occurred in our village early
Tueeday morning, when the flour mills
and warehouse were totally destroyed.
The fire was first noticed by J. Sims,
who vi as awakened by the intense
heat, when the warehouse was entire-
ly gone and the flames had reached the
third.fiat of the'noill. As soon as the
attune was given the firemen were on
duty, but the 'building were passed sae.
ing,and it was with difficulty that they
saved the engine and boiler depart -
'moot. Mr Finnemore, who operates
the mill, had 4,000 bushels of wheat on
hand which was partly covered by in-
surance, and a large quantity of flour
with no insurance, which makes the
loss heavy. The opinion is that it was
incendiarism. It isnot known what
will be done, but the public opinion is
st.ablisbment be re-
built. A. Beerner, Berliio, owned the
building, and is now in the villege see-

HATS Gee IN Ortintort.-.-The folloW-
ing • is (ho reason given by a minister
in a neighboring _town why women
should take their hats off lulus church:
o human being can get much good
out of the sermon unless he can see the
anleakeeit tecaltild_sledielite_e Mention.
No sermon can inspire a man who is
looking into a lop -sided aggregation of
deed birds, stuffed weasels, chameleon
skins, ribbons, jets, beads, stick straws,
paper flowers, t orn tassels, and thistle
down. It Makes the shiner feel lost in
this Wilderness. -Kingston Freeman,
EnnOtnriONAL OHANGE.-It is said
that there is shortly to be a very ma-
terial change in the policy of the Edu-
cational Department with regard to
country model schools and in some
,other respects. The changes will be
somethine in line as follows: The time
will be extended to eight months, the
fees will he increased and the teachers'
certificates will be made valid for nye
instead Of for three years. The legis-
lative grants • rural schools will be
graded according to whether theechool
section employe a iirstotecond or third
class teacher. In thi$ way it le hoped
to decrease gradually the number of
third-elaes certificates and consequent-
ly the numbers.' of county model
schools neceasary to give the third•clritie
training. After a while, it Is thought,
the county model Schools will (ram the
second class teachers the Normal

boquet on the grave of a • loved one.
The cemeteryplot is a• place which
should be carefully attended to but
we are sorry to•see that many neglect
looking after the testing places of their
loved ones gone before. In a number
of instances stones are lying, standing
at irregular angles or broeen while
several holes caused by graves fallen
in are not pleasing to see. In many
cases the owners of plots or relative a
have moved away and no one left, to
att emit° thern, but those who are in.
terested should see to the matter.
We commend the cemetery committee
for recommending to the council
board the improvements which will
be made. Everything should be done
to remove every defect so as to make
the Place one of beauty.
