towia altobad,fallen before the British
brain and brawn. The glad tidings
sent a wave of excite.nent rolling ober
the town and business was practically
suspended: Principals Houston and
Lough declared school off fol' the flay
and Mayor Jackson issued a proclama-
tion declaring a half holida!, and while
bells rang and whistles blew 'legs
aria bunting were sent, afloat. The
old Union Jack was everywhere. In
the p. m. a procession was formed
which marched from the market
square around town to the park . In
tha march were the Boys'i3rigade,under
command of Captain McTaggart, Col-
legiate Cadets, led by Captain (loathe,
the Fire Brigade, Foresters' Band,
town council, employees of several
industries and of bicyclists many. On
arriving at the park addresses were de-
livered by Rev. B. Clement, Principal
Houston of the Collegiate and Mr.
John Ransford. They were pithy and
to the point, and were cheered and ap-
',lauded. Mr. Ransford began with a.
patriotic epigram and in his remarks
accorded the Irish troops in South
Africa the honor of leading in achieve-
inent. The spealting over, a lacrosse
match, Clinton vs. Mileheli, was re-
sumed. At its conclesim the score
favored the visitors by five to one.
It was an off day for out boys. `The
intention was to have held the Ern-
p:re Dav celebration on Friday even-
ing hut the gond news caused a change
in the arrangements and the perform-
ance was shoved one day ahead. This
caused a hurrying to and fro on the
part of Principal Lough, his 'staff and
the children who were to take part
but when the curtain rang up all was
in readiness. Much credit is due Mr.
Tanney who trained the children for
the songs and choruses. The large aud-
ience appreciated the patriotic pro-
gram which was as follows
