The glad tidings sent a wave of excite.nent rolling ober the town and business was practically suspended: Principals Houston and Lough declared school off fol' the flay and Mayor Jackson issued a proclama- tion declaring a half holida!, and while bells rang and whistles blew 'legs aria bunting were sent, afloat. The old Union Jack was everywhere. In the p. m. a procession was formed which marched from the market square around town to the park . In tha march were the Boys'i3rigade,under command of Captain McTaggart, Col- legiate Cadets, led by Captain (loathe, the Fire Brigade, Foresters' Band, town council, employees of several industries and of bicyclists many. On arriving at the park addresses were de- livered by Rev. B. Clement, Principal Houston of the Collegiate and Mr. John Ransford. They were pithy and to the point, and were cheered and ap- ',lauded. Mr. Ransford began with a. patriotic epigram and in his remarks accorded the Irish troops in South Africa the honor of leading in achieve- inent. The spealting over, a lacrosse match, Clinton vs. Mileheli, was re- sumed. At its conclesim the score favored the visitors by five to one. It was an off day for out boys. `The intention was to have held the Ern- p:re Dav celebration on Friday even- ing hut the gond news caused a change in the arrangements and the perform- ance was shoved one day ahead. This caused a hurrying to and fro on the part of Principal Lough, his 'staff and the children who were to take part but when the curtain rang up all was in readiness. Much credit is due Mr. Tanney who trained the children for the songs and choruses. The large aud- ience appreciated the patriotic pro- gram which was as follows Tableau—Miss Canada, Miss H. Mc.
