Below are the official figures of the
by-election in 1880, together with the

Holmes an actual majority of 25.
When Mr Lane, acting returning offi-
cer, came to total up the. v. t •s ou

had inadvertently, credited Mr Relines
with Mr McLean s total vote, and Mr
McLean with the vote given fors Mr
Holmes, making an apparent majority
for. the Liberal candidate of 93. As the

he declared Mr' Holmes officially elerr-

throughout was_. a prettycareful one,

retcted, 2 were blank and 25 were
s��pprain. In the election of 1899 Mr
H,'imes received a total of 2274 votes;
in 1900 he received a total of 2104, being
a loss of 110, In 1 t c .111r McLean re-
ceived a total of 2131 votes, and• in 1900
2189, or a gain of only 5 votes. In 1899
the total vote polled Was 4408; in 1900
it was 4803.
