Misrepresentations as Usual?
Referring to the West Huron Par-
• liamentary exanoinatioo, the Goderieh
Star says :-
At No. 8 division, Goderich, although he poll
book showed that but 118 persons had voted, 128
ballots were found in thebox.
• This is ouly part of the truth, and
• stated as it is, is wilful misrepresenta-
tion of which the Star is unvariably
• guilty, The inference' which the Star
wishes to convey is that the extra bah
slots in the box were counted for the.
sitting member, yet the Star knows
that to be untrue. ,It knows that th'e
above paragraph is:a lie on its faee, but:
it has no hesitation or scruple about
publishing it, although the misrepre.
sentation -has been corrected before;
The Star is not ignoi ant of the fact
that some of these ballots were blank,
not counted for either of the candi-
dates, and were supposed to heve been
given out by the deputy, who anoin-
t entionally handed two ballots to
several of the voters instead for one. •
R. W, ()lark, 5IcLean's scrutineer in

aminattois p tge 317, swears "

In the same article the Star says
"The ballot printe sworethat while he Rad
orders to print only 8,150 ballots, he :printed at
least 8,450, and he would not swear big there
were even 8,000 printed."
This ie again a mistatement of fact -
Mr McGillicuddy swore that for the -
previutze Garrow-Beek election he had
Feinted ten thousand regular ballot's
and one thnusand tendered ones, and
when abe Returning Officer only or-
dered 6.150 tor the -Dominion election,
the pt ietei:natin•elly enoogh thought
he would oe shorts and printed 0,503,
but Mr McGillicuddy accounted for all
t hose printed over the number ordered
by the Returning Officer. It is simply
a distortion of his evidence to say • "he
would not swear but there were even
8,000 printed," He would not swear
there were not ten or fifty thousand
more printed, but he stated explicitly
and frankly his belief that only 6,500
were printed, all of Which he account-
ed for, and the committee believed his
evidence.

While there is no absolute certainty about

THE CAMPAIGN IN QUEBEC
lime are facts which should be
borne in mind by threat who are, at,
the present time, deliberately and
with malice aforethought, endeavor
I ing to arouse animosity between the
various creeds and races of our fair
Dommion. The people of Ontario and
the west probably do not realize the
extent to which this work is going
on in the sister province of Quebec,
where the election campaign is being
deliberately planned Along the line of
wilful duplicity. On every platform
from which a French-Catialliall • and.,
ience is addressed the Laurier Governs
: talent is attacked for ite pro British
leanings; the Premier is charged With
having drawn Canada into a policy of
imperialism, with having sacrificed
blood and treiteure in iho ware of the
empire with which we have . no con
cern, and to go still further in the
same direction if oppm tunity should
offer. Not only are the rank and file
of the Tory speakets and • the Tory
press operating upon these lines in the
province of Chiebec, but Sir Chariee
Tupper himself declares that if the
present policy of the Laurier Govern
went continues, "Government at Ot.
tawa will dioappear, and the functions
discharged there will be exercised ;it
St. Stephen's. "the question of taxa.
tion will be decided in England, and no
. less than $46,033,000 a year would be
required of Canada. as her share of the
cost of the•arinv and navy." -
ANOTHER STORY FOR ONTARIO
This is but a sample of the wild and
exttavagant statetnents being made;
every issue of the French Tory papers,
every speech of the French Tory po-
ollcntain "similar absuidities:
At the &erne time speakers alai papers
for the same party are declaring in
Ontario and the west that the Premier
is anti-British and that his chief sup
porters are traitors to the empire,.who
have grudgingly taken their stand for
imperialism only because compelled to
do so by the overwhelming force of
public .opinion.
Happily for Canada the true relative
