A Letter from Private Webb. — • SPRING% Rabin, Transvaal. June 25th, 1900. The following letter had been receiv- ed by the relatives of Mr Webb here: - Once more the welcome opportunity has arrived forus to get mail off • to -Canada. The . mail leaves to day. I am at presentperfectly well and happy. 'Our hard work is now finished and we are waiting orders for a return, to Cape Team, but its possible we shall- not, reach Canada until September. This place is very healthy; most of us are well and getting that tired look off our daces. We,ftre quartered in the opera •Iniuse; that is A, B and 0 el:maws-dies; we were formerly in the round house sat this station. • The nights here areavery cold and frosty, and, last ;debt we were on :'out- post" duty, eila when we woke in the morning ,our blankets were covered with fros&Vite daytime Is quite dif- ferent, as we can go around in shirt sleeves. The coal mines are again starting to operate, and the country in leenerid is getting quite "English." it is useless for me to give you any des- •cription of our worke with Lord Rob- erts' operations, as you know the papers followed our movements up to the present. I am not at all sorry that 1 -volunteered for this expedition. am one of the 370 who pulled through to the end, of what' has been a very hard and trying ordeal on a green regi- ment, but toiler as fighting veer we are through bow. This place is some 22 or :23 miles from Johannesbrirg,in the con- tre of the coal mining district, and is. no doubt, a very busy place when the mines are in operation, as all that can be seen for miles around isemokeetacks and coal and ore dumps scattered over the vast veldt, On June 17th (Sunday) I had the 'pleasure of witnessing one of the great sights of Africa, namely, a Sunday scene in a "mine compound." (A mine -compound is the native boarding houge, owned bythe mining companies, where they keep the native workmen, `Zulus, Swasis, Shanghais and others. All day Sunday they have their war and other dances, which I witnessed. Read Henry Stanley's book in this line and there you will find a grand explan- ation of it, no onecould believe it, un,' less you could see it. We were camped six' miles Mirth of the city of Johannesburg. aFor one day we were camped on what is called the "rand," the richest gold district in the world, hundreds of mines, millia&c; dot the hills and valleys for miles east and west, and white stakes can be seen of the claims of the mines, won- derful out here and I am glad to be able to write, ,and trust we shall see dear old Canada one more. WILL FRUIT GO 'SOUR.- Canadian sugar refiners tecently announced an advanced of ten eents hundred pounds in all grades of refined sugars, and it is said a further advance seems incredible, Since May2Ist'lest granta, lated and white sugars have been ad- vanced 70 cents per cwt., and yellows 65 cents per cwt., the principal cause being. the settlement of the war on sugars in the States together with the large output from the refineries. Clin- ton merchants are now selling at 17 pounds for a dollar, tint the chances are that they will have to cut off another pound before many days. Housewives will find this a perplexing problem to tackle just now when the "putting down" preserves has come. So much sugar is necessary and the advance in price means something to many. . • Tun BRANTPORD EXCURSION. -- The C. 0, F. proposed excursion on civic holiday, Thursday, August 9th, hav- ing fialen through on account . of the rates not being sat rsfactory, the Chi is - flan Endeavor and .Epworth Leagues of town intend to join their sister so- cieties of Goderich on this day and unite in a picnic) to Brantford: The train will leave Goderich at 7:15 a. in., 11 Ina 7.30, Clinton 7:40. A POPULAR VICTORZ.-rt is with very great pleasure that we inform our readers of the success of D'. A. Forrester at the Lawn Bowling tour- nament held in London last week. Mr Forrester, who is widreanoven among thellowling fraternity, entered for the Singles. This is always a hard, keenly fought contest. In it a 'player is thrown entirely on his own resour- ces He cannot, as in doubles or rink matches, confer with fellow playere, and so possibly aitoid errors in judg- ment. He stands offal's alone. On the occeeion referred to, the very first players from Western Ontario entered, and it battle royal was the result. But Mr Forreeter's onward march to vic- tory was unimpeded. From the • firet to the last, down they fell before his relentless, unerring, untiring skill. And when, the end came • it was it mighty cheer that greeted the prowess of our townsman. For Mr Forrester ienot only a good bowler, but he is it genial,whole-souled Man whom to . know a privilege. Little wonder therefore that the Globe styled it as we have -"A Popular Victory."- We add, may it not be the last, may there be more and many of them. The prize consisted of a high-class sporting 'Winchester rifle. . SICAWANHAEA YACHT RACES.
