RIG PICNIC. -Dominion Day was a
red-letter day in Dublin. The event of
the season in that district was the
- "grand picnic, organized by Rev. loather
• Fogarty,, in the interest of the new
• Catho he church being erected here,
Better picnic weather could not have
been desired, and being. a public holi-
day crowds of people took advantage
of the occasion. The picnic was held
in a grove immediately in the rear of
the church property. The Daly or ches.
tra, from ,Seafortb, were on hand and
the younger members of the company
enjoyed themselves in the "merry
dance." An entertainment of a more
intellectual nature was provided for the
older guests. Patriotic addresses, suit-
able for the day and occasion, were de-
livered by Mires A. McLaren, .M. R,
for North P h; A. Hislop, M. P. V.,
for East Huron.; B. O'Connell, McKil-
lop and Z.1.1McMi1lian, M. P., for South
Huron, who: was unable to be present
on account of his Parlimentary duties
at Ottawa. The event, however, which,
perhaps, created- more interestthan
• any other of the day, was the contest
between four young ladies for a gold
watch, presented by Rey. Rather Fog-
arty. The lady competitors were; -
Miss Tessie Carrol, of Dublin; Miss N.
Holland, of Beachwood; Miss Mary
Carling, Staffa, and Mies Annie Geary,
Hibbert. Each vote cost lOcents, and
for each vote polled, the voter is entit-
to own a brick in the new church, and,
of course there was no limit to the
number of votes any person might re.
cord. On the count being made the
vote was found to stand as follows: -
Miss Carroll, 3,450; Miss Rolland, 3,350;
Miss Carlin, 1,750; Miss Geary, 940,
makingin all 9,490 votes, ancl netting
the smug sum of $949. Several liberal
subsciptions in aid of the new church
edifice were also obtnined during the
day from friends who were present.
'The day was a success financially as

Government locating the shallow
places in the harbor, so that the dynes
mite party can carry on their work
successfully.

OBITUATM-One of the best known
and most respected residents' of this
town;hip, in the person of Jatnes
Davidson, died ,on Saturday' jamming
last. While for quite a tittle he tied
not been in his usual rugged health, it
was only on Wednesday of last week
that he took to Ms bed, and it was
soon evident that be was suffering
from,arrapopleptie stroke, Which„wag
beyond medical skill.- He was born in
•Mythlic, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, in
1831, and in 1853 he came to Canada,
and Settled in this township, He was
very successful as a farmer, and it may
be said he had few superiors in this
provinee. He conducted hie work with
zeal and intelligence, everything being
done ny careful systematic methods;
and he was over on the lookout for in.
formation regarding the latest im-
provements in stock and general
farming, visiting regularly for years
the leading•faira, and reading the best
agricultural papers. fle was for sevs
eral years a director of the G. N. W.
exhibition, and both in and out the of
-
flee endeavored to promote its inter-
ests and usefulness. But a higher
tribute to his character was his reputa-
tion for sterling honoty and upright.
nese, and he was frequently Spoken of
by those who knew him best an "Hon-
est Jimmie Davidson." Deceased was
Presbyterian,being a long time mem-

Connnorron.-The types will once in
a while make some very annoying
blunders. Last week an item appear-
ed undenthis heading which was writ-
ten to say that "Ben Switzer is popu-
lar, even if he is gritty," a fact which
everybody who knows Ben admit; to
be true. ..,put when it appeared in cold
print, the compositor had libelled our
friend by unintentionally transposing*
the word "gritty" to guilty, a term
which has no application in any way,.
We are sorry for the annoyance which
our friend has been wit to, and gladly
set it re -ht, This mistake is about as
annoying as the one which occurred in
a pronainent society paper, where the
editor, giving an account of a fashion-
able wedding, intended to describe the
bride's "trousaeau", and nearly fainted
when he read it in print "the bride's
trousers." -ED. NEW ERA. .

• Rarsnid.-The barn of A. Courtice
was raised on Thursday cif lase week,
without a,ny person sustaining even a
scratch. The barn is 52x62. The frame
is principally made up of old timber.
D. McLaren was the framer and cer-
tainly understands his business. About
sixty obliging neighbors lent their as-
sistance. Of course the usual race was
very exciting for a time. The captains
were Wm. Jenkins and D. Uhurchill, -
both goad men, • but Churchill's men •
were too fast for their opponents and ;.
had every _rafter on before Jenkin's
side pulled a rafter up.

friend, Miss Agnes Cooper. Those '
young men who loaf around the neigh-
bor's gated after League servicaehould
act a little more manly and descent
and have respect for their neighbors
even ifithey haven't any for themeelyes,
stretching their gaunt beads to hear all
they can and ruining their organs of
vision; a word to the wise is sufficient.
The members of Cole's church choir
have added to their fine list of music
by securing new anthem books. A re-
porter of a paper mentioned in his
items that . a beknighted wheelsman
was running over sheep; we don't like
any night hawk's insinuations when
no other but himself was the person.
A number around hesre have j ust joined
the rorresters in Varna; we reckon
the poor goat wouldhave a heavy load
to carry some of them. S. Switzer has
bought Rueben Glrigg's fast driver.
If those parties who called for butter-
milk the other evening, while on their
way to town from the breezy lake,
would take a stroll out some day, we
think we can -supply their craving ap-
petite. Mrs R. Beacom is visiting
relatives in and around Chatham.

ively, hag been, like the career of Lord
Gen, Roberts, an unbroken line of success.
During this whole time the factory hoe
been run continuously, except for a brief
period of four months in the year 1898, fol-
lowing the dioastrous fire, by which their
original premiees were destroyed. Then,
however, in its seemingly darkest hour, ite
greatest. victory was achieved, and the am-
bitious concern rose, plicenix.11ke, from its
ashes a greater establishment, with im-
proved facilities and enlarged capacity, and
to -day oboupies Very extensive fireproof •
buildings of brick and iron, with it capacity
of 500 orgaes per month. The whole prom.
1808 cover an area of 20 acres of land, and
represent an investment of upward S of a
quarter of a million dollars ($250:000).
Besides manufacturing organs, their ever-
ittoreasing. business now includes timber
limits, sawmills, drying kilne, and pros-
peotive veneer mills, conoentratieg on the
premises the manufaCture of practically
everything going . into the tonstruction of
their instrumente, and sroanstitutin.g alto-
gether an industrial hive which gives the
undoubted impression of a prosperoue and
welleminaged businosa.
Entering the roomy, perfectly -ventilated
and well -lighted' offices, with their Ave large
plate glass windows, one is at once im-
pressed with the solidity oethe institution,
by the genial Lyet quiet courtesy of the
worthy founder and head of the business
and his efficient staff. .
Passing into the large pecking and ship-
ping reonn where apparently npwarde of
1000 finished instruments were ready for
shipment, an idea of thepepularity of their
instrument'', the wide range of the repu-
tation of the firm, andnithe magnitude of
their 'business. may be formed , from the
ttddress cards, consigning their organs in
wholesale shipments, not only to near and
distant destinations. in the Dominions:but
also to many foreign countries, and here

The aim of the firm, however, has been
to make . the excellence of their organs an
inducement to purohaeers rather than to
impress them with the magnitude of their
faotories or the vastnees of their product,
believing that quality is of much more hon.
sequence to the purchaser than quantity,
and their lone experience and added know-
ledge, gained not only by study, but also by
practice, has enabled them to invest their
organs with value and character which
are strangers to many of the instrrimentO
in the market to.day.' They make a great
variety of styles of organs, from the

cathedral organ, and having great mope

for parlor use. ln construction, the Doher.

them who have used them for years fully
endorses these claims.
