Sir, -In his letter of last' ,week Mr El•
ford made several mie•statements wbioh,
if you will give me apace I went to correct.
I do not know how many ballots Ur El.
ford oeetroyed. at home. He says only one
and I am willing to accept that as correct,
i was not aware that tiffs was called into
question. I do know that there were seven
extra one& when the poll was opened -not
six as he now states --for I counted them
myself and so did Mr Eltord, It was these
seven ballots which were afterwarde do.
stroyed.
?tlr Elford's statement that all agreed to
keep the extra ballots until the close of the
poll is not correct, I ineisted upon them'
"being destroyed and between ten and eleven
a!nitlokhe put theta in: the stove. I saw
him do this, theballote burned being the
seven extra ones wbioh were found on the
Package. One ballet„was spoiled during
he day and this4a`y on the table and to-
'gether with a handful of the etuba were
destroyed near the close of the poll. It
wall this that was mietaken by a couple of
those prevent for the ballots now in die•
pute, an error; as all will understand, quite
easily made.
Mr Lewis Tebbntt, who made the declar-
ation, was oonetable, and had he only at-
tended to the duties for which be was paid
wonld have been in a position to have wit.
neeeed most of what went on during the
day, but he was away, off and on, either
feeding the cattle or drawing voters, A
polling boothconstable helping to hustle
in the vote is %novelty, even in West Hu-
ron. '1'eb utt no doubt saw the .stubs
burned and having. since been told that
they were the mu
oh e about talk d t b allots
now really thinks so himself. I will give
him oredit for that'and also for wishing to
help Mr Elford out of the hole in which he
has got himself.
Mr Elfordohargesme with saying that
no one but himever the
self eve article in
the Ottawa Journal upon which he now
binges this whole dispute.I said nothing J
of.the kind, for I sew theJournal when in
Ottawa and noticing its inchrreot report of
my evidence drew Mr R Holmes' attention
to it and asked him to have it oorreoted.
This be promised to do and did and next
day's Journal set itself right. Mr Elford
based his insinuation against me on . the
first report andignored the corroded yer-
i cion. If he wished to be fair why did he
do this ? The Globe, Mail and Empire,
London Advertiser, the .local papers of
Huron, and others reported me right. Mr
Elford is a great admirer of the Globe and
considers it the leading authority. Why
then did he not accept its report but make
use of a mistake made by a paper publish-
ed in 'Ottawa and whiah hae'no circulation
in this part of theprovince at all ? .
Mr Elftd says : "Neither in my letter
or anywhere else have I said that Mr Stan.
ley took a false oath.” Then what ie all.
,his writing about ? .:What is he trying to
prove 7
He says that when I went to him for at
explanation of the language he had need in
regard to mya 111 wee not•lu o .e.y ...end=
ly mood. ,-Perhaps not, but my • frame of
mind Was quite as good as his when he was
disenesing the question at the church door
after servioe. •
In conclusion I would again affirm the
correctness of every statement made in my
first letter and leave the public to judge as
to Mr Elford'e real motive for opening ' up
a dead qusetion and as to -the weight of
evidence we•have- both produced, •
I may also say that the same day that
I -started for Ottawa Mr Eltord acknow-
ledged to me in the presence of a -third -par
ty that the ballots wareburned abonteleven
o'clock. just as I stated in my eyidenoe..
