King Carlos and the Crown Prince
Luiz Philippe, of Portugal, were me
aassinated at Lisbon at Live o'clock
Sunday afternoon, The Royal Party
were returning home from attending a
fair in a neighboring village and were
in an open carriage, which was fired
upon by a group of men armed with
revolvers and carbines, The King and
Crown Prince were riddled with bil-
lets, a second eon, now the Ring, was
wounded, but the Queen escaped in-
jury. Her Majesty bravely, but vain•
ly, attempted to shield her husband
from the bullets. Three of the regi-
cides were shot down by the police, It
is not yet determined whether the
crime was the work of anarchists or
revolutionists. Prince Manuel who

The poor in the cities were in very
great need during the past month and
more 80 now, owing to the cold weath-
er. Hard times and little work has
made a big hole in the breadwinner's
pocket. We are pleased to see that the
citizens are helping those in "distress.
The people of Blyth need not go out-
side the corporation to help some who
may be iu need, and it may be your
neighbor. The poet says :-
Who is thy neighbor 7 He whom thou
Hast power to aid or bions
Whose aching head or burning brow
Thy soothing hand may press,
Thy neighbor is the fainting poor
Whose eye with want is dim,
0, enter then his humble door
With aid and peace for him,
Thy neighbor 1 Pass no mourner by,
Perhaps thou const redeem '
A limiting heart from ,nidery ;-
Go, share thy lot with him.

The citizens el this town would be
more than pleased it the daily papers
of Toronto would make* change. A
few menthe ago they al Ways got here
at four p. m., but with a change of
timetables we received the morning
papers a• 11.27 a, tn., but for the past
month we are lucky sometimes to get
them at seven p. 1n, A paragraph
from Seafor•th reads as follows :-Since
the beginning of the present year there
has been more dissatisfaction with the
railway service given by the Grand
Trunk than at any previous time.
Persona going north, via Bruce lips
through Clinton, were always aloe 1o'
catch the north bound train between
10 and 11 a, m. Now that the time for
the Stratford train corning north has
changed from 9.50 a, M. to an hour
ranging from 11 a, m, to 12.80, the
train of the Bruce line refuses to wait
the arrival of the Stratford train at
Clinton, The result ie that passengers
leaving here at 11 a. nl. are compelled
to wait in Clinton until seven o'clock
in the evening. During last week on
different days. groups of seymm, nine
and twelve persons used every- means
in their power to induce the Bruce
train to wait but of no avail. The re-
sult is that general dissatisfaction is

"A Kingly Gift
EARL GREY'S APPEAL
On behalf of Needy Consumptives
Strong words of Canada's Governor-General
At the official opening of the King Edward Sanatorium for Consumptives,
near Toronto, His Excellency delivered an address that must have an important
bearing on the future of the sanatorium movement in Canada. We quote :—
"The proceedings this afternoon commenced with a
beautiful and reverent prayer from your old friend, Dr. Potts.
He prayed that the light of the Lord might shine upon us.
That prayer is abundantly answered. He also prayed that
the White Plague might be removed. Well, whether that
prayer will bo answered or not depends upon yourselves."
"He It not a standing shame and reproach to the govern-
ments and Individuals that there is not more oar, taken by
the people of Canada to protect themselves against the
ours* of consumption?"
On his way out to the King
Edward Sanatorium,—so named
by permission of His Majesty
King Edward VII—the Gov-
ernor -General's car was stopped
in its progress outside the Canada
Cycle & Motor Co. by a large
crowd of its employees. A
contribution of one hundred dol-
lars was handed the Governor-
General, a donation to the
Toronto Free Hospital for Con-
sumptives.
"'Twat a kingly gift" said
His Excellency in making acknow-
ledgment. "I will tell the Xing."
Addressing the large audience that attended
Earl Grey said :
"Ladles and gentlemen, when the workingmen of Oanada
are setting an example of this oharaobr, 1 hope you will not
WI slew to follow, and 1 trust that the example of the Canada
oyele a Meter Oa may be followed, as I am sure it will, In every
factory and manufacturing industry throughout the land."
We carry these words to the people of Canada in our appeal to -day on behalf of the
these opening exercises, referring to this event
