Mrs. James McLaughlan and Alio
M. McLaughlan, of New York, and
Gus, McLaughlan, of Sintaluta, Sask.,
have been visiting for a few days with
old friends in Wingham.
At the last convocation of the Grand
Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Can-
ada, held in Toronto on the 22nd ult.,
Ex, Com. Dr. H. E. W. T'atelyn, of
this town, received the appointment of
Grand Senior Sojourner of that order, 1
The Wingham Hospital applied to
the County Council, which was in ses-
sion at Goderich last week, for fur-
ther grant to the hospital. Among
those who went to Goderich to press
the claims of the hospital were Mayor
Holmes, Dr, P. Macdonald, A. H. Mus-
grove, J. A, Taylor and Rich, Clegg.

mile track record- to 2.09. Four of
these cups have been awarded as fol-

1900—Sherman Clay, 2.11.
1904—Captain Sphinx, '1.09,1.
1907—Darkey Hal, 2.09.
The inscription on the loving cup is as
follows: "Presented by Port Huron
Driving Park Association to John E.

A large sleigh load of G. C. I. stu-
dents accepted the invitation of their
fellow -student, Miss Birdie Durnin, to
drive out to her parents, T. E, and
Mrs, Durnin, of Dungannon, where
they were hospitably entertained, The
evening was much enjoyed by the
young people, the drive being enlivened
by an upset on the way home.
Last Thursday the recount of the
vote in the recent mayoralty contest
.took place before Judge Doyle and re -
stilted in Mr.'Thompson being declared
elected by a majority of 6 votes, The
changes were as folitws; In No, 1
Div., of two rejected ballots, one each
was allowed ; in Nos. 4 and 6, Thomp-
son gained two more rejected ballots,
end in No, 7, seven rejected hallote
were allowed to Mr. Thompson, giving
Min ft gain of 10 on the recount, and as
Dr. Macklin had been elected by five
votes, t.hie placed Mr, Thompson just
the same number ahead, and he was
therefore declared elected, The cor-
rected statements by polls is now given

Duncan McCallum has delivered over
100 cords of green wood to the citizens
of Belgrave this winter,
The young men gave a very enjoy-
able dance in the foresters' Hall telt

We hear with regret of the death of
Et well known man formerly of East
Wawanosh, about three miles from
Beigrave, Robert Reilly, a man highly
esteemed by his neighbors while in this
vicinity. He was Councillor for East
Wawnosh for a number of years and
belonged to the Belgrave Methodist
Circuit Board of Trustees, The Win-
nipeg Free Press says :—Robert Reilly,
a pioneer settler of Eden, Manitoba,
has passed away, He has been one of
the leading citizens of Eden for 18
years. He Woe a devout and consist-
ent Methodist and was always protni-
tient in Conservative circles in his rid-
ing, His death is a distinct lose to the
Eden district. His Wife passed away
a couple of years ago. ..
Another of the first pioneers of the
third concession of Morris passed away
in the person of Mrs, Wm. Geddes, on
Saturday, the 26th ult. Mrs, Geddes,
whose maiden name was Mary Mc-
Lean, was ie her 82nd year, and came
with her late husband from Lanark
County, to the farts on which she died,
over fifty years ago. There was then
nothing but bush and no roads, and for
some gears niter there were no doctors,
Mrs. Geddes had to take the piece of a
phyelcian and was many a time called
away at 'midnight to attend the wants
of some of some of the new settlers for
which the older settlers to this day feel
grateful. Mrs. Geddes was of Scotch
descent and was a devout attendant at
the Presbyterian church of Belgrave
for the last forty years, when health
would permit, Her husband prede-
ceased her nearly two years ago. They
were moat generous and kind hearted
neighbors. They had a family of 18
children, but only seven survive—Wm.
and John on the homestead farms, Dr.
Geddes of Lucknow. Mrs, McLean, of
Winnipeg, Mae, Sterling of Melits,
Mrs, Johnston of Biuevale, and Lena
at home. 'I he remaine were laid to
rest in Brandon's cemetery by the side
of her late husband on Monday last,
Rev. J. J. Haetie, her pastor, conduct-
ing the service, The Borrowing fatnily
have the sincere sympathy of the com-
munity.

Jacob Morden is suffering from a
very sore hand, caused by blood poison-
ing, It originated from a prick of a
pin. He has been laid up with it for
several weeks, and it will likely be
some weeks yet before he can use it.
L. Snowden, who is employed in the
Mail & Empire jobbing department,
has been visiting bbs mother.
Wm, Winter's, who is employed with
Kennedy Brosd, butchers, fell while
carrying a quarter of beef and dis-
located his shoulder.

The January session of the county
Council opened last Tuesday at 8
o'clock with all the members present.
The clerk presided and asked the
council to elect a warden, Dr. Irwin,
Reeve of Wingham, moved seconded
by Jos. Hawkins, Reeve of Usborno,
that Robert McLean, Reeve of the town
of Goderich, be warden for 1908, No
other nominations were mode and at
the expiry of the half-hour allowed for
nominatiois the Warden -elect was in-
vited to the chair and made his declar-
ation of office before the clerk, The

The farmers have had a hard time
during the past week to keep the roads
broken for traffic.
We are sorry to hear that Miss Belle
Scott, 601 line, Is not so well as she has
been tor some time. Miss Scott is very
patient in her long illness.

from the barn floor to the basement,

John Campbell's hotel at White-
church, in the Local Option township
of East Wawanosh, was raided recent-
ly by Provincial Con.tablePhippen. A
ten gallon keg, partly full of whiskey,
was found. together with other: con-
victing evidence of the sale Of liquor.
