Squire and four cows bought .at Mr.

Batty, who was formerly in the mer-.
can tile business at.Williarnsford,Nor th
Grey, has been upon the Isle for „about
eight years and bat a high opinion of
its capabilities, especially for stock
raising. The grass is very nutritious
and cattle and sheep thrive upon it.
Manitoulin .hutter will yet he consider-
ed about the best in the market. The
farmers do not as a rule • fatten their
wade, having found it so far to• pay
better to sellthern as stockers at two
years old for which there is an increas-
ing demand in theadder • counties of
Ontario. Stock can be raised cheaply
up there -owing to the large amount of
unoccupied land upon which the cattle
roam all ourninerand require no atten,
lion. It le what on the prairies Would
be called ranching. The quality , of
the stock is being improved, other far -
mere doing as Me. Batty has done in
the way of importing Shorthorns.
Barley and pins 'thrive well but oats
not so good, and while. the Isle farmers
claim to grow a better spring wheat
than the mainland can they do not
consider fell wheat a sure crop as
spring frosts not'infrequently catch it.
The eultivation of fruit is increasing
and the Islanders expect to he ,ln a
posit ion to export apples in a few years.
The population does not show much
more than the natural increase though
there is plenty of room for More set,
