take a good sharp hoe and scrape all the
old bark off and don't be afraid of hurt-
ing them. There are a lot of insects
which harbor under this old bark, and'
when it is scraped off theY heVe no place

mentioned for pruning trees. My time
is when I have a good sharp saw and
time to do it,' I have tat often heard

about the poor varieties of fruit. Graft
all good healthy trees. The kinds that
I would recommend to graft on those
trees are the Cranberry Pippin and
Baldwin. Any tree that is not fit to
graft should be cut down and made into
firewood, for that kind of fruit is no use.
I do all my own grafting, and any per
son who would like to know where to
get. Cranberry Pippin grafts write in e
card to Porter's Hill.

The grand jury at the Spring Assizes,
1899, for the county of Huron, beg to
present that they have visited the corn-
-mon gaol of the county and found evert -
thing tieat and clean and in good. order,
and the gaoler ootteteous and attentive.
All the male prisoners were.actively en.
gsgcd in the 'whoa' yard. The only
complaint made by the prisoners was
that for the past ten dftys the bread
supplied was not geed. We examined
what was on hand and found itsour. We
endorse „the action of. the Council in
taking pteps to reconstruct the . gaoler:el'
residence: believing that it vilifim prove
the sanitary conditions, mere t• specially
the ventilation. Ail of which is re-
spectfully submitted. " •
