the pair. Laterthey.took u the busi-

actly as is alleged to be the circum-
stance in the (base of the prisoner
King, Conover and Garbutt would dis-
appear for several weeks at a time,.: and
come back with big• rolls' of money.
After ,:their ;arrest,'., early ',in the
nineties, ; ' it was learned that
their modus o Brandi was precisely the
ease as that in use by' he gang to-
day. They would go to a town under
• thepretext' that they wished to buy
horses or grain and secure the confi-
dence of some local liveryman or hotel:
keeper. Him they would induoeto.intro-
duoe them . tb the local banker, Whom
' they would ask to cash a draft ,on some
other bank, which would turn out to be
good, Thus having set up their appar.
ent honesty, just as the three -shell
'pp man lets his victim win once or twice
1 before robbing him, they would prooeed
to pass another draft on the samebank,
which would prove to be forged.: Ere
the fraud was discovered the crooks
would have vanished.' Finally the de-
frauded institutions joinedforces and
put a detective named Lucas on the
case, who, after a -long investigation,
traced the unknown thieves' to Wingham.
Ont. ' Suspicion fastened on Garbutt;
and Conover, who were known to be in
the counterfeit money business,„but
they in the meantime' had'disappeared.
OneJuly day, at the time When the
Dufferin race track...was in operation,
Detective Cuddy of Toronto spotted Mr.
Garbutt' in the betting' ring and arrest-
ed him. '
About the some , time Conover was
captured in New York city and taken
back to Indiana, where he was found
guilty and sentenced to ten year's imv
prisonment in the State penitentiary.
Extradition papers were applied for in
the case - of Garbutt. He resisted
strongly, and by a series of appeals
kept up .the fight for. upwards: of . nine
months'. • Finally, after every resort was
exhausted, he was taken to Indiana for
trial. There Conover, who was in the
penitentiary, ha'd opened up negotia-
tions with the defrauded banks to re-
turn them the sums stolen from them
on condition of their using their influ-
ence with theGovernor of Indiana to
secure him a pardon. They did so with
success, and Conover was set at liberty,
Garbutt, on being brought baok to Ino
diana, succeeded in compounding tI
matter in the same way, and. wh n
brought to trial the banks refused to
proceed against him, and he was once
more freed to Make his living . off the

A couple of year. ago they commen-

'Be sure to,allow the ,big boy' of the
family to thy just ..how he wants his
room,” writes Mrs. John B. Sims in an
article:on "The Sleeping -Room on the
Farm," in , the Janusry Ladies Home
Journal.. "Do not make the mistake of
putting the boy off with just any old
thing; many a boy's life has been made
miserable bya constant migration' from
one sleeping -place to another, winding
up with 'a bed on the floor just to make
room for some more important member

,his own,` and do not ask him toleaye it.
The furniture in one boy's room whom
I know is old ,oak;' the . old-fashioned
lounge is -covered with figured cretonne
in brown and gold ; the big easy -chair
matchers it. The windows have draped'
curtains ofJapanese art cloth in dull
red and gold; even the floor:ooirering
corresponds. One may be sure that
this boy has bonniebrown hair and eyes,
with cheeks like the aunty aide of a
fah.peaoh. That be is orderly we can
tell froni the arrangement of his collars

he loves pictures, from the small repro-
