PROHIBITION CHAMPIONED,
To the Editor of Tats Nrtws-REOoao.
Dear Sir,—In tho Mail and Empire of Nov. 27
appeared a letter from the pen of Miss Clara H.
Mountonstle on the tern pornnco question, and with
your permission I will andoavor to answer a few
of ber questions, and reply to score of her argu-
ments.
She speaks of temperance organizations as
"facilities for the propogation of OR." '-hotbeds
of evil," n "curse," and says they have a "con-
rnminati"g influence" while their members are
"ill-disposed persons." Now I will not stoop to
reply to the above tirade of abuse further than
oommend to Miss Mountnestle that porttim of her
own letter which says people oughtnot to "meddle
with other pact) We business instead of at'end;ng
to their own and in their over -zeal defame find
try to ruin well living people who fire opposed to
their particular method of reforming the drunk-
ard."
Her statement that the Canqdian homes of the
present day are what the temperance orenniza-
t°ons have made thein will be accelited by the
temperance people as a compliment, although not
intended as such. Nowhere on the face of Ood's
beautiful earth can be found a spot where relig.
ion and purity p vdominate in the home to rho
same extent as r the Canadiprt home. True,
there are places • habitation where religion and
purity are stmn• ,, but be it remembered these
are the homes o drinkers and not temperance
people. Like a to,- ring lion this cursed traffic fell
upon those homes, touched the inmates with its
wand of withering desolation, blighting hopes,
withoring intellects, debasing propensities, brut-
alizing appetites, demonizing passions, and defil-
tng consztences. Those are homes which live
been made wretched by the liquor traffic, and
their inmates persons, who, had it not been for
the traffic, might have lived for usefulness on
earth, and honor and immortality in heaven.
Can Mise Mounteastle point to me one home
in Canada, or even elsewhere, that has one more
joy of earth, or whose inmates have one more
hope of Heaven on account of this pprofane, be-
wildering, intoxicating beverage? If she can, I
p-omise show her ten to one that have fewer
joys or earth, and whose inmates have lase hope
of Heaven on account of the same beverage.
Misr~ Mounteastln says "liquor is essential tc
the proservatioo of life during severe illness such
as In g4ppe, inflammntion of tbelungs, eto.," and
relates instances showing where persons thus
afflicted who used liquor were restored to health.
But it is worthy of notice that in each case men-
; oeod the liquor was mixed with somethingdk%;
in one case it was in`:ed with '•soma other drug,"
and in I'm other w'th egg. Now the fact that
thougam is of people died of la grippe during the
cpiuomic, taken in conjunction with the fact that
wois'.:ev formed one of the chief componeut parts
of the medicine used makes it equally as sensible
tc suppose that the "other drug" or the egg had
rs touch influence in effecting the euros mention-
ed its had the whisltey.
f quite agree with lifiss Mountoostle that Re
"cannot find a bettor authority on which to work
for the supprossioti of evil than the word of Ood,"
but her at,iempt to identify- legislation against
fho liquor traffic gods to •how that she has foiled
fo grit -rip the situation. She evidently does not
know Ont'wj at is oummonl,y called "drunkenness"

holism or Dipsomania. Now r nA what would
he thought of tho sanit,v of the man who with his
Bible in his hand It old qw to theretiom in an
endeavor to prove that 't cesspool in the centro of

rried on the wings of the
wind to rho four corners of the earth leaving
death and desolation in their train. shnnld not be
lo;islated against beranse such leudslnti(in world
be eont.rary to the word of God. What would be
thought of the sanity of suet it person, and yet
what aro all the ills which cholera, or typhoid
fever have ocnasionod since the advent of roan upon
this planet, in comparison lith those which intox-
icatingliquors hnve produced annually in
Canada gleno. While cholera and typhoid
rover destroy the body, and perhaps,
ultimately liberate the soul, drunken-
ness not only males the hody so corrupt that a
demon would seurn to tdwell therein, but it blights
and sn+iths, mildews and damns the soul.
Another curious i'nature nonneeted w:th the
arguments advanced by the npronents of prohi-
bition is that while they consider it unscripturnl
to legislate agntnst the cause of evil, they are
quite willing to legislnte ngainst the efloct. Here
is what ;Hiss Mountenstle would do with liquor
traffic—the cause of drunkenness, I quote her
own word•:—"I would leave whiskey as free os
when fifty yonrs,, ago good whiskey could be
attained for twenty-five cents agallon." She would
leave it free. Here is what she would do with
the offect. She would have "nn act passed to
suppress the bar, and arrest and punish any
man found in it public place in a state oflnebrin-
tion" and have him "fined," or "sent to an nsy.
him."
"And let him who became intoxiented on his
own premises be arrested, tried and convicted in
like innnnor. "
,,And in the event of the intoxicated man doing
any bodily harm to any one let him he arrested,
tried. and punished for his offence as though it
were premeditated."
And if drink makes it man crazy. and he trills
his fellowman, she wonid hnvo him "tried for
murder and committed to the penitentiary for
life, and if this dud not stop the evil I would try
more severe mensures."
Her a-gument, surnmecd up in one ward, is that
the people of Cnnsda should sit with folded arms
an(I witness the devnatation by this destroyer
and lift not finger to stern the tide of withering
desolnt, on, while the poor mornl who falls beneath
its withering inflaenco must be dealt with as it
criminal.

PROHIBITION CHAMPIONED,
To the Editor of Tats Nrtws-REOoao.
Dear Sir,—In tho Mail and Empire of Nov. 27
appeared a letter from the pen of Miss Clara H.
Mountonstle on the tern pornnco question, and with
your permission I will andoavor to answer a few
of ber questions, and reply to score of her argu-
ments.
She speaks of temperance organizations as
"facilities for the propogation of OR." '-hotbeds
of evil," n "curse," and says they have a "con-
rnminati"g influence" while their members are
"ill-disposed persons." Now I will not stoop to
reply to the above tirade of abuse further than
oommend to Miss Mountnestle that porttim of her
own letter which says people oughtnot to "meddle
with other pact) We business instead of at'end;ng
to their own and in their over -zeal defame find
try to ruin well living people who fire opposed to
their particular method of reforming the drunk-
ard."
Her statement that the Canqdian homes of the
present day are what the temperance orenniza-
t°ons have made thein will be accelited by the
temperance people as a compliment, although not
intended as such. Nowhere on the face of Ood's
beautiful earth can be found a spot where relig.
ion and purity p vdominate in the home to rho
same extent as r the Canadiprt home. True,
there are places • habitation where religion and
purity are stmn• ,, but be it remembered these
are the homes o drinkers and not temperance
people. Like a to,- ring lion this cursed traffic fell
upon those homes, touched the inmates with its
wand of withering desolation, blighting hopes,
withoring intellects, debasing propensities, brut-
alizing appetites, demonizing passions, and defil-
tng consztences. Those are homes which live
been made wretched by the liquor traffic, and
their inmates persons, who, had it not been for
the traffic, might have lived for usefulness on
earth, and honor and immortality in heaven.
Can Mise Mounteastle point to me one home
in Canada, or even elsewhere, that has one more
joy of earth, or whose inmates have one more
hope of Heaven on account of this pprofane, be-
wildering, intoxicating beverage? If she can, I
p-omise show her ten to one that have fewer
joys or earth, and whose inmates have lase hope
of Heaven on account of the same beverage.
Misr~ Mounteastln says "liquor is essential tc
the proservatioo of life during severe illness such
as In g4ppe, inflammntion of tbelungs, eto.," and
relates instances showing where persons thus
afflicted who used liquor were restored to health.
But it is worthy of notice that in each case men-
; oeod the liquor was mixed with somethingdk%;
in one case it was in`:ed with '•soma other drug,"
and in I'm other w'th egg. Now the fact that
thougam is of people died of la grippe during the
cpiuomic, taken in conjunction with the fact that
wois'.:ev formed one of the chief componeut parts
of the medicine used makes it equally as sensible
tc suppose that the "other drug" or the egg had
rs touch influence in effecting the euros mention-
ed its had the whisltey.
f quite agree with lifiss Mountoostle that Re
"cannot find a bettor authority on which to work
for the supprossioti of evil than the word of Ood,"
but her at,iempt to identify- legislation against
fho liquor traffic gods to •how that she has foiled
fo grit -rip the situation. She evidently does not
know Ont'wj at is oummonl,y called "drunkenness"

holism or Dipsomania. Now r nA what would
he thought of tho sanit,v of the man who with his
Bible in his hand It old qw to theretiom in an
endeavor to prove that 't cesspool in the centro of

rried on the wings of the
wind to rho four corners of the earth leaving
death and desolation in their train. shnnld not be
lo;islated against beranse such leudslnti(in world
be eont.rary to the word of God. What would be
thought of the sanity of suet it person, and yet
what aro all the ills which cholera, or typhoid
fever have ocnasionod since the advent of roan upon
this planet, in comparison lith those which intox-
icatingliquors hnve produced annually in
Canada gleno. While cholera and typhoid
rover destroy the body, and perhaps,
ultimately liberate the soul, drunken-
ness not only males the hody so corrupt that a
demon would seurn to tdwell therein, but it blights
and sn+iths, mildews and damns the soul.
Another curious i'nature nonneeted w:th the
arguments advanced by the npronents of prohi-
bition is that while they consider it unscripturnl
to legislate agntnst the cause of evil, they are
quite willing to legislnte ngainst the efloct. Here
is what ;Hiss Mountenstle would do with liquor
traffic—the cause of drunkenness, I quote her
own word•:—"I would leave whiskey as free os
when fifty yonrs,, ago good whiskey could be
attained for twenty-five cents agallon." She would
leave it free. Here is what she would do with
the offect. She would have "nn act passed to
suppress the bar, and arrest and punish any
man found in it public place in a state oflnebrin-
tion" and have him "fined," or "sent to an nsy.
him."
"And let him who became intoxiented on his
own premises be arrested, tried and convicted in
like innnnor. "
,,And in the event of the intoxicated man doing
any bodily harm to any one let him he arrested,
tried. and punished for his offence as though it
were premeditated."
And if drink makes it man crazy. and he trills
his fellowman, she wonid hnvo him "tried for
murder and committed to the penitentiary for
life, and if this dud not stop the evil I would try
more severe mensures."
Her a-gument, surnmecd up in one ward, is that
the people of Cnnsda should sit with folded arms
an(I witness the devnatation by this destroyer
and lift not finger to stern the tide of withering
desolnt, on, while the poor mornl who falls beneath
its withering inflaenco must be dealt with as it
criminal.
