On the first of August Suurnrer- hill factory started the manufacture of white cheese. LARGE BLACK BASS. -Messrs. Alex. McKenzie and James Steep were on a .fishingexpedition near Bayfield the ether day and returned with some seventeen black bass, the largest of which weighed about one and three ttuarter pounds. In consequence a number of personal friends in town tickled their palates at tea time. STOCK SHIPMENTS. -Last week S. S. Sinith, Chas. Wallace and Chits. CIVIC HOLIDAY. -This year there was noir so many absentees from Clin- ton. The railway carried some 2C0 passengers to Port Stanley, St. Thomas and other points. A good number drove to Bayfield and various other lake shore points, where pie-nic part- le4 revenPd in enjoyment. There was no special amusement here. BUSINESS CIZANGEE.-Mr. Thomas Hillock has disposed ofAis dray and business to Mr. James Danford, who took charge of the business on Monday week. Mr. Hillock may return to Stratford to reside, where he owns pro- perty. While we are Sorry to loose such a good citizen as Mr. Aillock, we :are pleased to learn that so respected a roan as Mr. Danford. has taken his " place. Mr. Hillock will not leave town for a short time. KIND WORDS NEVER DiE.-A rev. gentleman of the Methodist persua- sion in remitting his subscription for THENEws•RECORD says: -"Your ad- mirable paper has been a very welcome visitor at our home. I have enjoyed the reading of it very much. You will please flue one dollar to pay for it up to next vear. You have my warmest and most cordial support, I hope you and Yours are well and wish you great success in your laudable work." G. A. R. SOUVENIR NUMBER.- The Illustrated Buffalo Express promises to outdo itself in a superb G. A. R. Souvenir Number in its issue of August 22nd. It will be of extra size with it coverlin colors, and will undoubtedly be of uncommon value and interest. The succeeding numbers will also contain many illustrations and much other matter relating to the Buffalo Encamp- ment. That these issues will consti- tute an excellent pictorial history of the Encarupment is assured. The Ex- press never promises more than it can fulfil. AGE OF AssEssABLF DOGS. -The Municipal World gives the fol- lowing in regard to the assess- ment of dogs which will prove of interest to many of our read- ers: -1'320.-W. A. H. -Would you kindly say in the next issue of your paper at what age a dog is taxable P Pleasegive authority for opinion, as I can find no mention of when a dog is taxable, Some hold that when ,t pup can see it is taxable, others that 1t is not taxable until it is over six .nonths old." The statute does not fix anym imum age, so that it is the duty of the assessor to assess every dog Without regard to Cage, unless there is some by-law of the municipality, exempting dogs under a certain age from assessment. NOT CORRECT. -The Exeter Times says THE NEws-REconD is crossing swords with the Seaforth Sun over its false accusations against the manage- ment of the 12th July celebration at Bayfleid. This is not correct. If it were, the Sun man, who is well known for his lyingand traitorous propensities, would be headless, When we require lessons on matters of this kind or infor. mation as to 12th of July matters, we do sincerely object tri allow honest •rnd faithful Orangemen to be slandered by the Sun mugwump or to swallow his lies ourselves. In this matter we tare not grinding axes, but we confess ,we sire protecting the Urangemen of Bayfleld from the repeated slanders of the father of lies, better known as the double-dealing, unreliable Seaforth Sun man.
