Our attention has been called to
"fake and fraud advertising" by it
highly respected citizen of Clinton,
The subject has received solve atten-
tion in these columns during the past
few weeks. Onr esteemed contempor-
ary, the New Era, has taken exception
to our criticisms and has at the same
time riven space to liars and swindlers
to back upand CIve it reputable stand•
int; to their dead- ealings with an
unsuspecting public. A newspaper
should be the guardian of the public
and iwotect the public front frauds and
swindlers of every description. A
short time since a "faith cure" healer
appeared in Clinton. Hewas denounc-
ed in these columns. All he had to do,
however, was to go to our unscrupul-
ous totem. and the advertisement was
inserted for filthy lucre without ainur-
mur. Asa result people in Clinton -
and we have their words for it -paid
freely of this world's goods without
value or restored health. The money
lraid by the innocents would settle the
Bills of advertising for some of the hest
business men of Clinton for several 1
years. So that when the pious New

The great national Epworth League
convention in Toronto will result in
much good, not only to the cause of
religion, but also to foster more friend-
ly relations between the citizens of the
United States and this Greater Britain.
The addresses of welcome and replies
were well tempered with true Christian
sentiment and demonstrate plainly
how this noble body Of Leaguers can
play a future prominent part in the
peaceable destinies of the two great
powers.
Out attention has been called to t
disgraceful attack on the Orange Orde
in the New Era of July 9, taken fron
the Toronto World. THE NEWS -RE
CORD lifts always known that our con
temporary was bitterly opposed .to th
Order and that that paper has no
changed its policy in this respect tui
snore than a lecipafd could change it
spots. And Our readers know how to
estiluate the worth of such -fake'
attacks on the very burse and sinew o
this country.
The St. Mary's Argus denies Mr.

The Hon. hugs John Macdonald has
taken hold of the leadership of the
Provincial Opposition in an energetic
Manner, says the Winnipeg Nor' Wes-
ter. His tour through the Province
hits been a very gratifying' one. He
has received an enthusiastic recep-
tion wherever he has spoken. Ile
has met the people and 11as learned
their views while imparting his own.
He has put himself thuroughly in
touch with the local leaders ,of the
party. Land has stimulated the energy
of the local . organizations: His
speeches will have a splendid educa-
tive effect on the country --
The Seafprth Sun last week gave .,he
Orangemen of Bayfield a rap oven• the
knuckles. It said "the speeches were
very tame" and charges the honestcom-
inittee- with doing ;`fake' advertising."
The accusation is as unjust its tt is un-
true. The Orangemen of Bayfield have
always been faithful to their promises
as far as human obligations could he

ful, truthful and loyal. When the
