The statement of revenue and ex-
•)enditure for April which appeared in
.3aturday's Canada Gazette shows that
the anticipation of the increase in CL18-
tors At Excise rates on spirits, tobacco
&c., has callsed7,•a tremendous upward
sweep in the rei•en'ue which will help

but which, probably, will not be suffi-

million or two despite the fact that the

the same month hast year. This ad-
ditional revenue simply means that
large quantities of goods have been
taken out of bond In anticipation of
increased taxation and will bp com-
pensated for this month and next, and
for three months Ili the new fiscal
year by large decreases in the revenue.
The collections for April were $4,483,-
540 As compared with $3,140,120 for
April of last year, showing inn increase
of $1,343.420, which added to the $1,4(X),.
000 increase in March makes about two
and three-quarter millions of doliars
collected in Advance in these two
months. The increase of excise hits
been phynomenal, the receipts rising
from $049,081 In April 18116 to $1,s8e..

cent. The total revenue collected in
Advance in march and April has been
