GEORGE HANLEY.—ill the death, of George Hanley last Saturday morning at the good old age of 80 years and 3 months Clinton loses one of the inost upright citizens ever resident, here. Of late years he had at tittles been a severe sufferer from various ailments, Pneumonia hein• the cause of death. rbe late George Manley was a native Of .Enniskillen, Ireland, a type of man- hood we regret to say that is too fast passing away because their places can never be filled. On the 11th of April, 1838, he left for Londonderry and sail- ed for Canada on the 21st, arriving in Hamilton in June of the sauce year-. He spent a couple of mouths in Wil - moth township and then cause to Goderich where he engaged with the Canada Company. He possessed all the courage and strength required for the many hardships and privations the, pioneer was in these days compelled to endure. As he remarked the other day to the writer, "during his long life he never knew what fear was, and oknow that he was about to pass to the great beyond he had no fear,” He bought and settled on lot 40, con 8, Goderich township. Here he hewed Out a home" and by his indomitable courage and hard vvork accumulated a competence for his declining years. Insecure investment a few years ago, however, lost a good portion of it. A ]over of his Queen' and Country, he was one who defended his country during the rebellion of '37, marching to Sarnia, Windsor and other; points. He had three brotbers—John of Ore- gon, and Charles and Will. being de- ceased. He was twice married and leaves 3 sons and a daughters, George and Robert of Goderich township, Mrs. Green of Bayfield, Charles of Dakota, Mrs. Albert Elliott and Mrs. Arthur Elliott, both of Dakota, Mrs. R. H. Elliott of Goderich town- ahip, and Mrs, Jno, Millet- of Harriston. Mrs. Thos. Walker of WWII, and hl` widow. The deceased was an Orange- man some 61 years and often related the cause of his early initiation. He was an active and valued member at the time of his death and for tnany years was one of the leading 'spirits here. His presence at the various meetings throughout the county always gave life to the proceedings and his sound advice was always heeded. He was an honorary county chaplain for some years and occupied the same position fit the district and primary lodges. He ryas also a valued member of the Scarlet Chapter, and Black Order fn both of which lie held prominent posi- tions. He was a stanneh Conservative and a Methodist in religion. The fun- eral took place to Bayfield vesterday under the aupices of the Orange Or- der and was very largely attended, The pall bearers were Will. Murphy, Thos. Kearns, Thos. Beacom, Wen. Ford, D. Catntelol and A. M. Todd. The floral tribub. s were beautiful, one a sheaf and sickle from his Clinton Orange brethren, the handiwork of Mr. Thos. Cottle. Peace to the noble dead. THR LATE MRs.
