WEDNESDAY, F1':P,RUARY 3rd, 1896, CL'RRE\T TOPIC'S. There is to be a change at Castle Dixon in the county town. Governor Dixon, we are informed, has tendered his resignation to the Ontario Govern- melat. Joseph Griffin, of Aslitield, who allowed the Registrarship to pass him, will accept the Goal as a balm to his wounded feelings, That M'r. Griffin will make a competent official we believe, but we know sevoral Re- formers who etre after it and will not be satisfied. If the raid on Dominion officials succeeds several partizan Re- formers will lie rewarded. Toronto Star: -Those Canadian pessimists who are accustomed to de- cry their own country as inferior tothe big Republic for the workingmen, will receive some enlightenment from a comparison of the average wages earned by the workers of the State of New York and Province of Ontario. In the former, according to the statis- tics of the labor bureau, the average for 1895 was $436, while in the latter it. was $ii51. There is not a State in the Union that would make a better comparison than the Empire State, where so many highly skilled work- men flud employment. The fact that Canada leads that State in averse wlages is a striking testimony of the advantage of residing north of the lakes. — London Free Press:- Everywhere this kind of intimidation is noticable. In this way a paying job is provided for the commissioner, and if some of the men can be displaced, so main openings will be made for Grit "heelers" who are howling for office. The people at, large have looked for a more moderate course from a Premier of Mr. Laurier's professions. But, then, he is not the "roaster of the ad - administration." Foster should be a matter of satisfac- tion to all who believe that a strong Opposition is a necessary feature of responsible ;government. There is no man in Canada who can so ably handle fiscal questions. According to Mr, Mulock, 1"Every promise Mr. Laurier has made to the people will be faithfully kept." . Then we shall have unrestricted reciprocity and Imperial Federation, with free trade and protection combined. It is all nonsense to say that Mr. Laurier will keep his promises. No mortal man could do it. There are two millions of men un- employed in the United States, and Mr. H. H. Cook announces that the Na- tional Policy is to go next session. The people of Brantford, who have a stake in this eountry and who want to live and prosper, should up and tell the Government that their principle is Canadian industry first. The owners of the Kingsville wool- en mills recently,m,tde an assignment, and now explain, in a published letter, that the cause of their failure was in- ability to secure orders from the east, owing to the unsettled condition of business, which makes it impossible for dealers to decide upon purchases until the trade policy of the govern- ment has been announced. There are other woolen mills in Canada, which are suffering in the same way, and what is true of the woolen business is true sof all manufacturing bust- nossess. Surely the clever statesmen who make up 'the strongest govern ment Canada ever saw" will know soon whether they are in favor of free trade, tariff for revenue or protection. There is no excuse for delay. Notb- ing can be done towardsggetting re- ciprocity with the United Stae6s, and for the government to wait, until March -until the American congress meets -before calling parliament for the despatch of business would be it foolish waste of time which would probably close up many more Cana- dian mills. A portion of that speech is thus reported : He then took up the question of an- nexation. The only way it can be ac- complished will be to bring about a closer commercial policy. We feel that il; is necessary to obliterate the present tariff, and that a more liberal and extended trade policy will have a most salutary effect on our prosperity. "We are a small country in every re- spect except territory," concluded Mr. Charlton, and as small bodies are at- tracted to larger ones, so also are we attracted to the large country south Of n9." Of course, next time Mr. Charlton unakes a speech in Canada, he will deny having said anything of that sort at Tonawanda last week. But is it not marvelous that Mr. Charlton should be so regularly and persistently misrepresented? Have the reporters of the United States formed it combine, Balch member sworn to report things that Mr. Charlton did not say -to say that he said the very opposite of what be did really say ? Where do these American reporters get the ideas for tbete reports if they do not get them fro►n Mr. Chatrlton ? Can anybody be- lieve that there is a conspiracy among the members of the American press to misrepresent Mr. Charlton's utterances every time he speaks in the United States? Uertainly his speech at Tona- wanda, as reported, was very much different from the speeches he has made in Canada -wholly different from the speech be made in Toronto the other day ; but docs he maks a lifference between his speeches made in Canada and his. speeches delivered n the United States?
