ALONE W„ H BUFFALOES,
The Sense of Desolation Stride". Carse to
a Man ou the Frontier,
The following IS an extract from the.
personal reminiscences of David N. Eider,
who wttneesed the slaughter of buffalo to
the far west:
Early in Juno the buffalo began to cross
the river. Every day the country south of
the river had grown bucker with the in-
coming hordes until It seemed tbe country
would no longer hold them, and they were
compelled to ford the stream. Day atter
day and night after night for six long
weeke their onward tide to the northward
was as moveless as the Sow of the river.
Blaster and blacker the oountay grew,
and the last thing to be heard on a still
eummer night during all that time was
the continual splash of the dieturbed wa-
ters, intervened with the bellowing of the
bulls and the shrill howl of the coyotes.
Many a night I stood by the door of the
old atone stockade alone and listened to
those strange, weird sounds, and a con -
riotousness or an awful lonelinese would
come over ma. Many a might I looked up
to the stars and said my prayers, wonder-
ing if the God of the heavens knew where
I was and what I wee there for. When
day by day I saw the devastation of the
country by this army, countless as the
hosts of Cyrus marohtng on Babylon, it
seemed that the geography 0! my boyhood
days was right and that I was indeed in
the heart of the great Amerioan desert.
Again, I would reason, if this country
°Quid support all this wild life, why gob
support man and domestic life? With all.
my doubt and fears I'stald, fasolnated ae
by a spoil with the strangeness of the prob-
1e)iis that surrounded me.
In J'ulf new hope name. Four young
men came from Ellsworth to spy out the
]rind for homesteads on the Walnut. They
were not satisfied with Barton oounty.
They said it was "too thickly settled."
The best claims with timbor had beon filed
on. They employed me to take them into
Rush county. I located them on the Wal-
nut, near where Rush Center now stands,
on "running water and timber." When
Adam was driven from the garden of
Eden, he undoubtedly took Eve by the
band and traveled many days over the
richest soil on earth to find a claim with
"running water and timber."
While I was gone the Cheyennes made a
raid on the Fort Larned reservation and
made off with all the government mules.
I was delayed longer than I expected, and
when I returned I found Finn overjoyed
to see me, as he thought I had been cap-
tured. It was the Fourth of July.—To-
peka Capital.

carried oft by Eagles.
A Oaribu telegram says:—One of
the most remarkable stories of escapes
from death heard for many years. is
related by Peter Pinpiere, a young fat -
mer and hunter just over the St. John
River in Canada.
Friday forenoon Pinpiere left horse
at the head of a party of young farm -
era. to storm an eagle's nest on the top
of Walley Mountain, Leight miles away
heing the objective point of the expe-
dition. The two parent bride were cap-
tured after a hard struggle and secure-
ly tied claw and claw. The rope hold-
ing the birds was passed to Peter who
carried them out to the level edge of
the towering rock, and sat down ou
the cord to hold the birds still.
Suddenly the eagles screamed and
spread their wings and started orf with
Pinpiere clinging to the rope. For 30
miles they carried him, then the young
farmer's hands gave out, and he drop-
ped to the ground. Pinpiere was un-
hurt, but badly shaken up,
WRONG HEART ACTION
Wrong heart action causes nervousness,
nervous dyspepsia, shoe tnese of breath and
other distressing symptoms, Mr S.
Yelland, of London, Ont., was cured of
these troubles by taking Milburn's Heart
and Nerve Pills. Mr Yelland says: "They
are a remarkable medicine, and I have not
been troubled in the least since taking
them." -

"Act 1.--A man introduces himself
at my office as Dr. E. L. Adams of
Stroudsburg, Pa, talP.s (and talks learn-
edly about the throat) of sending a pa-
tient of his, a Mr. Henry Sawyer, in
consultation. He then speaks, of desir-
ing to buy a spray apparatus; asks me

sents it, saying he was sent by me, giv-
ing detsuls He orders the apparatns
and desires it sent to Dr. Adams, --

phone, saying he knows nothing about
it); presents a check made payable to
his order, indented by him, in payment
for the spray and reoeives a balance in
cash (in this instance $10, I believe).
"Act 8. ---(:heck returned; no good.

"Act 4.—The bogus and plausible
representative of the medical profession
has the money. The trick is, of course,
capable of various modifications."
An old trick is being worked upon
the members of the medical professioii
with sucoess in several instances. A
man calls at the doctor's office at a time
he knows he is away. Asking for the
doctor and learning he is out, the man
is, oh, so sorry, but maybe the good
doctor's wife would answer. The doc-
tor's helpmate is summoned and is in-
formed that the visitor is a patient of
the doctor and lives (in one instance)
in Newark, N. J. He is anxious to set-
tle a bill of $29 and asks the wife to
give a reoeipt for that sum. The good
wife, overoomo both by the vision of a
$20 debt being settled and also by the
flattering remarks of the pleasant man-
nered fellow, gives the receipt. In ex-
change he presents a certified check for
$25, gets the $5 in change, and ---well,
in due time the poor doctor jots down
in his noconnt book on the credit side,
"For experience, $5. "—Medical Record.
