OPPOSITF TOWN HALL
A Trip to Rosstand.
The O.P.R. has commenced the building
of the Crowe' Neat Pose Ry.; this will
bring East Kootenay with its great wealth
of goal, gold, silver, copper and lead into
prominence. Notwithstanding the great
depth of snow in the mountains parties are
out proepeoting and laying out town sites.
Operations on the Crow's Neat Pase road
will be commeuoed at. Nelson in the West
Kootenay at onoe, and it is expected the
work will be completed in eighteen months.
There are reports, however, of negotiations
with the Dominion Government at Ottawa
that may delay operations.
The district is now reaohed by stage
from Golden main line,also
boats 1
o nthe
Golden when
run from G the Colambia riven
opens about May 1st. TheGreat Northern
railway, it is said. will enter Eaet Kootenay
i`romthe south. From Nelson, west, the
C. P. R. now has a line to Robson. From
this point Heinze is building a railway
south to Trail, where be has built a emelt
er of 250 tons capacity per day. He has a
narrow gauge line to Roseland, which will
be changed this summer to a standard
guage. It is also said that Heinze will
build west from Robson into the Kettle and
Boundary country. These regioue are im-
mensely rioh in minerals.
The 0, P. R. will also build a short line
from Arrowhead, their present terminus,
to 'Trout Lake thty and Ferguson in the
Lardeau district, whioh is said to rival the
Slocan in rioh galena ores, averaging 30 to
300 oz, diver, $25 gold, oopper 10 per cent.
to 15 per oent., and lead 60 per cent. The
leads are strong and large and oan be easily
traded.
The poor man hae in these regions this
year the opportunities offered in the Trail
and Slocan districts two years ago. To
reach thee° districts, one leaves the C.P.R.
main line at Revelstoke on the Columbia
river, which place seems destined to be-
come the business centre of all the above
mentioned districts. There is now a popu-
lation of over 1,000, the business men are
conservative and prosperous; they believe
in progress, but not in booms. Here the
O. P. R. has a town site of 320 acres. The
Kootenay and Columbia Navigation Com-
pany has 400 acres; the latter company has
recently been purchased by the C. P. R. A
large hotel is now being built by the C.P.R.
near their station.
Going south from Revelstoke by the C.
P.R. branch line, Arrowhead is soon reach-
ed, at the head of the Arrowhead lakes,
which are merely a widening of the Colum-
bia River. From Arrowhead the splendid-
ly equipped steamers of the C.P.R run dai-
ly to Robson. Trail and Nelson. ,These
steamers rival in comfort and accotnmoda•
tion those on the Hudson river in New
York. From these points by rail and wa-
ter one easily reaches New Denver, Three
Forks, Bandon, Kaelo, Slooan, Silverton
and Salmo, ell thriving towns and mining
camps in the Slocan, and Roseland in the
Trail Creek districts. A new steamer is
being built exclusively for passenger traffic
by the C. P. R.
When one considers the new railways to
be built this year opening up new districts
as rich as the Slooan and Trail Creek, and
the other works that will go with tbie great
river of wealth in every part of this vast
Province, it is impossible even to conjecture
the millione'that will he annually produced.
All ore is now exported to the United
States. The customs officers are charged
with keeping strict account of this.
Notwithstanding all these considerations
pointing to a great boom this season and to
a lasting prosperity, people without capital
should not come into this district until af-
ter the first of May, and even then they
may encounter some hardships and disap-
pointments.
A word of warning to intending immi-
grants. British Columbia, as a whole,
practically speaking, is a mild country ab-
solutely, the small portion of arable, till-
able land is already taken up; now who are
the people who are coming to British Col.
umbra, farmers and their sons? If so,they
had better consider twine before they do so.
The men this country wants are practical
miners, and they will come across the line
from the bordering states. Farmers as a
general rule make mighty poor miners, as
they are too old to learn the business; of.
course, pluck brains and muscle have suc-
ceeded where capital fails. This country
needs capital, and it can be profitably em-
ployed if care is taken to examine all offer-
ings carefully.
British Columbia Government has de-
cided to exclude Chinamen and Japanese
from the ,mines. The impatient reader
will ask, What of Roseland? Well, it is a
wonderful mining Damp, claiming 7,000
population. In every direction for miles
every inch of ground is staked into mining
claims. The rook is intli'nsely hard, devel-
opment work is expensive. A great many
claims are well advanced in development
and give great promise. The Le Roi at
the depth of 530 feet hake paid $350,000 in
dividends. An English syndicate is nego-
tiating for it at $5,000,000. The War
Eagle has paid $187,000 in dividends and
has been sold to Toronto men at .$750,000.
Several other mides are under offer to
English syndicates at high figures. The
options have lately been extended. Two
recent tests of Le-Roi'low grade ore, which
had been cast aside as worthless have
shown this ore to be free milling; this
means a great deal for the Roseland people.
The superintendent now claims that $6 ore
will pay; heretofore nothing under $30 was
shipped,
Experts and practical miners from all
parts of the world say that Roseland will
soon be the greatest known gold camp in
the world. This season will tell, as thous-
ands of dollars are being spent in develop-
ments and machinery. Law and order
prevail throughout the camps of British
Columbia to an extent to oanse constant
surprise and praise on the part of Ameri
cans.
A few words concerning the mining laws:
Any person eighteen years of .age, male or
female, subject or alien, can take out a free
mining lioense at a coat of $500 per year;
armed with this, olaims oan be located to
any number, exoept that there can be only
one claim by one person on the same ledge.
Claims are 1,500 feet square. Work on
claims filled since 1891 is oonfined to the
limits between the walls of such claims.
Dozens of Americans were asked as to this
and only one preferred the United States
laws, allowing a claim owner to follow the
dip, spurs and angle wherever they led. All
othere claimed the British Columbia law
to be better as it will prevent the litigation
that hae ruined solmany American mines,
Five hundred dollars may be paid down, or
$500 worth of work done and a drown
grant at once taken, or$100 worth of work
moat be done on the claim during each year
for five years, The law is now being alter•
ed so that $100 can be paid eaob year, in-
stead of doing $100 worth of work.
Living in these camps is high arid wages
are good. Looked at from every possible
point of view, British Colunrbia' seems to
offer the greatest advantages of any mining
country in the world. Time and oonsider-
ation should be taken by those contemplat-
ing investments or removal to these parts.

He Had Fallen Off
Patrick was a new man in the light
horse regiment, blit his cheerfulness and
witty replies had already established
him as a favorite. He hail one draw-
back, however, and that was his awk-
wardness when on a horse's back. Nat-
urally his position required the opposite
of this, and Patrick worked hard and
faithfully to acquire the ease and natu-
ralness of bis comrades when riding. He
congratulated himself that this was at
last accomplished. But one day when
on parade his horse shied and threw him
with considerable force. When he re-
gained oonseionsness, he found that his
arm had been broken with the fall. With
hie usual characterrist good humor the
pool' fellow spoiled in his pain as he said:
"Well, well, it1a too 'bad. I thought
I•had improved in my riding a great
deal, but instead I have fallen off. "--.

AYER'S PILLS
"I would like to add my testimony to
that of others who have used Ayer's
Pills, and to say that I have taken them
for many years, and always derived the
best results from their use. For stom-
ach and liter troubles, and for the cure
`aadache caused by these derange-
ments, Ayer's Pills cannot be equaled.
When nip friends ask me what is the
best remedy for disorders of the stom-
ach, liver, or bowels; my invariable
answer is, Ayer's Pills. Taken in sea-
son, they will break up a cold, prevent

A PLEA. FOR THE M. D's.
To the Editor of the New Era,.
I have often thought that a tribute of
thanks was due to our medioal men for
their untiring sympathy and 'kindness to
the afflicted. There is no class of men who
toil so unceasingly and receive so little.
thanks. Some may say they are well paid,
but there are very few medioal (nen who
do not make many calla upon sick persons.
give careful study to the ease. supply the
needed medicines, and never ask or expect
to be repaid. True, in the majority of Mae -
es the Dr. makes his charge and receive°
what he asks, but does that really pay
him when all is counted? How much
would any of us take for the Sabbath's
rest
the comforts orta of home and the sanctu-
ary
rest,
y asings; keep it up week after week
and year after year? He prizes home ties
us sacredly as other men do, but cannot
give time and attention to those be levee
best. He cannot help entertain his friends
or spend ah evening out. Custom demands
that he attend funerals, but he is not always
treated as he deserves, from the fact that
the means he used were not effectual in
saving the life of the loved one who has
been taken from them, when 99 times out
of 100 the case was almost hopeless when
he undertook it. How much would any of
us take for a night's rest when worn and
weary ? But the Dr. must. be ready to
answer the boll at any hour, plunge into
storm and mud, and in spite of weariness
he is compelled to think incessantly. I
have often wondered why we do not hear
our medioos mentioned in public prayers.
The Queen and the Royal family, states-
men and magietra, L every degree are
presented to God as pereona of special in-
terest and it is quite right so to do, but
why not the medical men also ? Who is
there that needs speoial grace more than
he; who can need the companionship of
Jesus, the direction of the Holy Spirit
more than he? He has many a obanoe to'
minister to the spiritual needs of those
who may not be willing to hear it from a
Minister of the gospel, One of our Lord's
chosen eisoiples was a doctor, and we be-
lieve there is no calling where the power of
Christianity oan be better shown than in
the medioal profession. If we, who have
not each strain of nerve, patience and
health, need the Sabbath and midweek
service of prayer to keep us calm, what
does the doctor need, whu very rarely can
attend the House of God. Let ns not for-
get that they have souls and bodies the
same as we have. Let us give a cordial
greeting when the rr eet them, and especially
in our prayer's pul lio and private, let us
make special mention of the medioal pro-
fession.
