The Weekly Register, the leading Cath- olic journal of England, prints Mr Laurier's Montreal speech, with the following introd- uotion:—"A great banquet to Mr Laurier in Montreal brought together some 000 people of note in the Dominion, and was the occas- ion of a speech in which the. Premier put forward, in honorable frank terms an ex- planation of his policy on the great school question—a polioy which, though support- ed by large numbers of Catholics at the polls and approved by the four Catholics og, the Cabinet, has incurred the opposition of a strong party of his fellow Catholics throughout the Dominion. Catholics t hrough the empire have an intereat in the good name and —what is more involved in this oase—even the good judgment of a man of their religion, who has risen to the rank of Prime Minister in the land hitherto ruled by Protestants, and the tone cf bis speech at any rate gives good promise of the possibility of a reconciliation between, friends who never should have been estrang- ed." A RADICAL CHANGE A HAMILTON LADY UNDERGOES AN EXPERIENCE AND RELATES THE HISTORY OF A SEVERE TRIAL Mrs James Graham, 280 James street north, Hamilton, wife of the well known grocer of that address, relates the following circumstances. Mr and Mrs Graham have resided in Hamilton for the past fourteen years, and are very well and favorably known. Mrs Graham says: "During the six months prior to taking Milburn's Heart and Nerve Pills I had a serious trouble arising from wrong action of the heart and nerves. One of the symptoms was that I could not lie on my,left side, for if I did so my heart throbbed so violently as to give me great pain. The smallest noise or the slightest exertion would start my heart palpitating terribly. It was impossible for me to go up a short flight of stairs without stopping to rest and regain my breath. I was excessively nervous, and my limbs would tremble as if with ague. My hands and feet were unnaturally cold, and I suf- fered from sharp pains in the back of my head. The slamming of adoor would near- ly set me wild. Frequently I would wake up frightened, and then was unable to get to sleep again. I lost flesh, and became very weak and despondent. I felt miser- able in min min•3 and body. "For aix months I have been constantly taking medicine, trusting that it would help me, and for a time was undor the care of•a physician, but all the efforts I made towards a cure were of no avail: My phy- sician finally told my husband: "You know there is no cure for heart disease," which made me more despondent than ever. "Six weeks ago I was induced to try Milburn's Heart and Nerve Pills, and from that time my restoration to health' dates. I have taken four rbox boxes, which I bought at John A. Barr's drug store, corner James and Merrick streets. These pills are the only medicine that has done mo any good, or given me relief. I am happy to say that they proved that the doctor was mistaken in saying that heart disease could not be cured. Since I commenced taking Mil - burn's Heart and Nerve Pills I have been daily getting better. I can now go up stairs without trouble and attend to my daily duties without the slightest distress. I have gained in flesh, in health and in strength. My blood is healthy and circu- lates freely. Lying on my left side causes ine no inconvenience or pain, and I enjoy health and restful' sleep. My neryes are strong and vigorous, and there has been such a radical change for the better in my condition that I can say these wonderful. pills have practically made a complete cure. I can recommend them without the slightest hesitation to all sufferers from similar complaints. (Signed) Mrs James Graham, Hamilton, Ont." NEWS NOTES. A Holdup That Was a Fizzle. A prominent west side physician had just retired for the night after 'a busy day,and had just expressed the hope that the ills of man would be considerate enough to permit him a few hours' un- interrupted repose, when the bell rang and the words came up the speaking tube: "Come at once." He jotted down the address, burgled Into his clothes and, as he left his apartment, rememboring the prevalence of holdups in the vicinity, planed si revolver in his ooat pocket. The ease was so serious and the night air so biting that after walking a few blocks he broke into a trot, both to gain time and warmth. He bad traveled a quarter of a mile in Me way and bad nearly reaohed his destination when he noticed a man a few rode in front of him, also running, but at a slower pane. The physician Dame within a few feet of the stranger, when the latter suddenly stopped, jumped on a stone coping at the side of the walk, and, drawing a pistol, Rhouted at the physloian to "stop." The physician, though startled, was quick to appreciate the situation, and, whipping out his own weapon, prepared to resist this attempt at "hold up" to the end. The two stood thus for an instant, eaoh with a pistol leveled at the other and each, silent and motionless. The pbysiolan was the first to speak. "Stand aside and let me pass," he said. "Why," stammered the other, "aren't you chasing me?" Mutual explanations followed. Tho stranger was a belated clubman, had thought • the physician was a thug after him, had run until be gave out, and then had turned to give battle if neces- sary. Pistols were returned to pockets and two scared men went on their respective ways. Yes, the physician ar- rived in time.—Chlcagn Times -Herald. Lagoon of Yen lee. A great engineering work of immense importance to the City of Venice has just beenf' completed, says the London Standard. Fifty-eight years ago, in order to prevent the damage caused by the occasional, overflowing of the Elver Brenta, the Austrian Government, on 'the recommendation of the celebrated en- gineer, Paltocapa, carried out oertaln works by which the mouths of that, rlver wore carried into the Chioggia Lagoon, some distance south of their original out- let. Since then the afj'uvium brought down by the river has threatened to con- vert a portion of Chloggia Lagoon into a fever -breeding swamp, and also to cause serious damage to the whole Venice Lagoon by sitting. It was a000rdingly decided to oonstruot a new channel for the Brenta, • sixteen. kilometers in length, giving the river a direct outlet to the sea, near Brondolo, still further south. The scheme, which was estimated to poet 8,000,000 lire, and was bsgun in 1884,has now been brought to a successful conclusion. The new channel, by means of subsidiary canals, Mao provides a fresh outlet for the 13aochigliono and other rivers formerly flowing into the Venice Lagoon. What to Say About the Baby.
