RAILROADS iN CHINA.

A missionary writing from China tc
a friend recently described the diffi-
culties under wMoh the newly 0 com-
pleted railroads are, conducted in that
c•ouhitry.
P&awngers in the first-class coaches,
he said, exhibited so strong a desire tc
carry off various articles from the rare
as souvenirs of their trip that the
coaches were speedily stripped of those
tbing-a that contribute, to the comfort
of the Passenger. They took away with
them hat and bundle racks, mirrors,
lamp brackets, hooks, small tables, and
even doors. They were considerate en-
ough to leave the car frame and wheels,
A,nd the purloiners were Government
Officials and people belonging to the
wealthy classes.
The 9tations along' the railroad avec
which the writer travelled were rude
sheds, very unclean and without .it c,haiT
or bench. The cars, too, were very
dirty. While tbia was especially true
of the second-class coaches, which were

Unwashed people, the first -clays coaches
also became very unclean in a shoe
time. Tt i:oon lvearne necessary to take
out all the upholstery and replace i,

When the railroads, were being buil

contractors were stealing Chinese chis
