Collier's Weekly has an interesting
article in the current issue on the Haase
of the Popularity of the game of base-
ball The writer says that perhaps
there was an answer to this in n conver-
sation which befell in Cleveland several
years ago, when delays of travel chanc-
ed to bring four National League teams
together in the same hotel. The subject
of any player's popularity end the cause
wan up, There were lour of the most
popular men in the game in the crowd
—certainly four men who ought to
know, One thought the man who made
sensational catches in the field and
startling stops in the infield won popu-
larity; another thought it was relia-
bility and steadiness and base -running:
a third felt sure a malt's carriage. quick -
nese, and cleanness in movement and
play did the trick, while a fourth
thought it was put-outs and assists that
were the best pleasers of the crowd.
"You are all wrong," said another, who
had come up behind them unnoticed.
"The crowd likes the crack of the bat
and the long hit,"

TDE GAMEY CABG.
The royal commission on the Gemey
case presented their report to the On-
tario legislature last Thursday. The
result of the finding in brief is as fol-
lows :—Charges of corruption stand dis-
proved by great teams of evidence; ac-
cuser is wholly discredited ; Provincial
Secretary Stratton vindicated, and gov-
ernment cleared of charges; commission
questions the credibility of tnan1 of
(limey's statements, declaring that he
played a double pert and that his ac-
tions were erractic and inconsieteut;
mutilated pages in tate account hooka of
the Croseiu Piano Co. and Gainey's pe-
culiar actione in regard to the deposit
slips considered to be damaging to his
veracity ; commission finds that apart
from the provincial secretary, Gamey
had no intercourse with the toss min-
iatry; his plan was to wreck the goy-
erntnent.
It is understood that the government
will give Chancellor Boyd and Chief
Justice Falconttridge *500 a day each
for their services nn the royal comtnis-
elon. They sat 27 days so that they
will receive altogether $18,900 apiece.
It is also understood that the govern-
ment intends to pay one lawyer on
each aide, Mr. Johnston and Mr. Blake,
and their fees will likely be ahem,
*5000 each. The entire cost of the in-
vestigation will amount to between
*40,000 and *50,000.

London,C.uada,
—The late Mr, Justice Lount was
always fond of a joke, and his good
humor was contagious. An anecdote
about him is being re -told. In days
gone by he was a young lawyer at Bar-
rie, where Rico dr. D'Arcy Boulton had
a law office. Mr. Lount, in driving
home one dark night when the roads
were blocked with snow, ran over a
calf. The farmer demanded *10. Not
having that amount in his pocket, Mr.
Lount told the farmer his name was
Boulton, of Barrie, and to call ani see
hitn. In due course the farmer called
upon Mr. Lroulton, then a candidate for
parliament, but he indignantly denied
'responsibility. The farmer then took
legal advice from Mr. Lount in entire
ignorance that he was the real delin-
quent. Lount undertook to "Ree' Boul-
fon, to whom he addressed the follow-
ing weighty arguments; That no doubt
the farmer was mistaken, but an elec-
tion was coining Oil, eta. Mr. Bonito')
paid up, and at the next county bar
Mr. Lount told the whole story with
great, enjoyment.
—Hon, W. S. Fielding introduced a
bill in the House of Commons on Mon-
day to encourage small savings of a
class not reached by the government
savings banks. A Toronto gentleman
had asked some time ago for a charter
for a bank of this kind. It was thought
better to have such an organization of
this nature established under some gen-
eral rules which would apply to others.
'these penny banks might be established
by letters patent, issued by the gover-
nor -in -council, and would to collecting
agencies for the government savings
hank, A. small proportion, perhaps five
ler cent, would be retained by the penny
bank, but the balance would be placed
in the government savings bank. These
banks would not necessarily have the
ordinary capital, but would have a
guarantee fund of *10,000 as a guarantee
of sound management. They would be
established largely on a philanthropic
basis, and would be allowed one-half per
cent above the ordinary- savings bank
rate, the additional one-half per cent to
be devoted to the cost of management.
No deposit could exceed *800 and the
penny Woke would be neither money-
lending nor money -investing inetitu-
tionb.

or nonsensical. For instance, a few

--Mr. J. Knox, a well-to-do farmer,
about 80 years of age, living near
Britton, and about eight miles frofromListowel, wag found by one of his
family near his barn about eight o'clock
Saturday morning dead with his throat
cut from ear to ear. He had his
breakfast 11.4 usual, and seemed in his
usual healthy spirits, and did his usu 1
morning chores. He had evidently
meditated the deed for some time. for
the knife with which he cut his throat
was an old tahle•knife which he had
filed to a sharp edge and made a came
from some heavy cloth in which he had
carried the knife in his pocket. He
leaves a widow and several of a family,
—Not a week passer without news
from some one who is in serious trouble
through endorsing a note for a reletive
or friend. Through misfortune, slck-
n sick-
nessor rascality the maker of the note
has failed to meet it, and the berdon
falls upon the endorser. There ie a fine
quality of bravery in the way some of
these men face the situation and work
out the last dollar in order to save their
honor, but the wife and children may
suffer long before the debt is aatisfled.
It is hard for some men to refuse this
e ndorsement for a friend, yet it Is al-
ways a risky thing to do. We wish
that a sudden attack of pen petsy might
strike most of our friends when they
are called to endoree notes or sign con-
tracts with strangers.
