failure in Maine, and notwithstanding that
God did not remove the fiery serpents, but
appointed a remedy in the uplifted pole,

A Letter Fr11; ,China
°`o' tfie Bditor of the New Lira.
DEAR SIR: -I received the ropy of
your paper which you sent me a shin I
time ago. It was quite a treat to have
the pleasure of looking over the co-
lumns, once so familiar to me; old as-
sociations and old friendships come
back to us out herewith a renewed
power of attraction. I am glad to say
that I have, greatly enjoyed my first
months in China. The Chinese gave
me a very warm reception and I feel
as much at home now as if I had been
here for a long time. The women in
our Bible School, (which my sister has
charge of) are much interested in my
getting the language, so much so that
they have invited me to live with
them so that they can teach me. There
are a number of very interesting wo-
men now with us who are under in-
struction\for a short time. There is so
y P Y tie c oth etu•-
tains, which they drew aside, inviting
its to look in. Atone end stood a
table on which were placed two idols,
which were supposed i to minister to
the spirit of the person who was dead.
Three sets of chop -sticks were platted
side by side, and food is regularly
served there; two candles were kept
burning thereat night, and vessels
filled with ashes collected from incense
burnt. I asked if they ever saw the
spirit, when it came back; the young
woman said "no" with a nervous sort
of a smile. it, is hard for us to have
the slightest conception of the super-
stitions of this people.
You will rejoice with its in the fact
that within the last three months a
large quantity of Christi" ,*,,I r^,i.'cure
has gone into t`he Palace, at the re.
yI ve"' of' the Empover himself, and
further in the fact that from the Em-
peror has gone forth a special Edict as
"a last warning,", enforcing the pro-
tection of missionaries in China, a
copy of which I enclose as it appears
in the North China Daily News of
July 21st, 1898,
A LAST WARNING
A special Imperial edict of the 12th
instant blames the high authorities of
the provinces for not being strict and
stern enough in their orders W the lo-
cal authorities under them, with re-
gard to the protection given to mis-
sionaries and their converts, which is
theirs by right of treaty and concern-
ing which the Emperor has repeated]y
issued decrees, one after the other. All
officials, high and low, have therefore
failed in their duty to the Throne, and
the Emperor now for the last time is-
sues the present decree warning all
concerned to act more vigorously and
energetically; for his Majesty is de -
