SPANISH FLEET AT
SANTIAGO DESTROYED
Off Santiago, July 3. — The Spanish
squadron, commanded by Admiral Cervera,
whiob caused so much anxiety to the Amer-
ican Government until it was bottled up in
the harbor of Santiago, attempted this
morning to escape the fate which awaited
it if it remained in the harbor. Had ha
remained, bis vessels most likely wouid
have fallen into the hands of the Ameri-
cans, and it was this oontingenoy that he
determined if possible to avert. At 9.40
o'olook this morning watchful eyes on the
Amerioan vessels blockading Santiago saw
the torpedo boats Furor and Pluton coming
out of the mouth of the harbor. Close be-
hind them followed the Almirante Oquen-
do, Vizcaya, Reina Maria, Teresa and Cris-
tobal Colon. Immediately after leaving
the harbor the armored vessels turned
westward and proceeded at a high rate of
speed while the torpedo boats made straight
for the Brooklyn, Commodore Schley's
flagship. Meanwhile the Americans were
not idle. The Spaniards had hardly laft
the harbor before a heavy fire was opened
upon them, and several of the Americans
started in pursuit. As the torpedo boats
started for the Brooklyn, the Gloucester,
commanded by Capt. Wainwright, which
was lying close by, started for the two
dreaded little boats, firing upon them as
she advanced. Meanwhile the Texas, Iowa,
Oregon, Indiana and Brooklyn were in hot
pursuit of the big Spanish ships. The Viz-
eay a and Reina Maria Teresa were hit re-
peatedly, but continued to fire and run, In
a short time the Almirante Oquendo, in-
stead of holding her course, put lip her
helm and headed in far the beach, her com-
mander having apparently concluded that
it was impossible for him to escape, and
that he would destroy his vessel before let•
ting the Americans capture her. She was
rnn ashore at a point about 8 miles west of
Santiago. Almost immediately the Reina
Maria Teresa followed the Almirante
Oquendo, going ashore scarcely a quarter
of a mile 1rem where the latter took the
beach. Shortly after they t r went
ashore
fire brokeke out upon them
and soon they
were wrapped in flames. In the meautime
their crews had got ashore. The Vizcaya
kept on four tw•o miles further, and them
she, too, started for the shore. Almost as
soon as she grounded, there was a terrific
explosion aboard of her, her commander
evidently having determined to blow her
up to prevent her being captured by the
Americans. The Americans now deyotect
all their attention to the Cristobal Colon,
which, apparently uninjured by the Amer-
ican fire, steamed ahead of all the Ameri-
cans, with the exception of the Gloucester.
The latter vessel, meanwhile, had, unaided,
destroyed both the Platen and the Furor.
Of the 60 men who were cu the Pluton, 20
of thorn escaped ashore and later were taken
prisoners. Lieut. Wood in a small boat
rescued six men from the Furor and cap -
tared her colors. 1600 prisoners were cap•
tured on the beach, including Admiral Cer-
vera and the members of his staff. He and
bis captors were taken on board the Glou-
cester in a, small boat. The wounded
prisoners were also taken aboard the Glou-
cester. The slaughter on the torpedo boats
boats had been frightful., As Admiral
Cervera went aboard the G!ouccster Capt.
Wainwright shook him by the hand and
congratulated him upon having made a
most gallant fight. He placed his private
cabin at the Admiral's disposal, and he and
his staff retired there. While Captain
r
al
Wainwright was speaking to the
the latter wept. The crow of the Glouces•
ter dressed the wounds of the Spaniards
and procured food for them. They were
all half starved. Admiral Sampson on the
flagship New York had gone to Siboney
for a conference with General Shafter, but
he returned in time to join in the chase of
the Cristobal Colon. The morning was
calm and beautiful, and the whole engage -

PAINE'S
CELERY
COMPOUND
Is the World's great nerve medioine.
Thio is the month when overworked men,
women and girls in the home, workshop,
store and office feel nervous, tired, dull, ir•
ritab!e, languid and weak. These condi-
tions result from weak and unstrung nerves.
The nerves regulate the blood supply
through the body. Upon the healthy action
of the nerves, health and happiness depend.
People who have their nerves out of repair
in the hot weather are the most miserable
of mortals.
Paine's Celery Compound is the only
true and safe specific for diseased nerves—
it is the one medicine for the banishment
of all hot weather ills and weaknesses.
Physicians recommend it every day; it is
the favorite life -giver with millions on this
oontinent. Take no substitute from your
dealer; "Paine's" is the kind that cures.
A very unusual, and probably fatal, ac-
cident happened at Stratford Saturday
morning when Charles Lewie, the seven-
teen -year-old son of the proprietor of the
American Hotel, fell out of a third -story
window, The night was very sultary and
the young man pulled hie bed up to the
open window, with the result that he rolled
out. It was some time before his moans
attracted attention. A medical examination
revealed the fact that hie right wrist and
[levars] ribs were broken, while serious in•
ternal injuries are feared,

meat could be seen by those aboard the
warships. The beach is now strewn for
miles with half -burned lifeboats and dobri•,
of all kinds, among which are many corp-
ses. The hospital ship Solace has beeu or-
dered from Guantanamo to care for the
wounded. Just after the action a warship
flying the Austrian colors appeared off San•
tiago. Seeing the Spanish ships on fire she
promptly put to sea. Hugo beacons have
been burn,d at Santiago for the past two
night, and It is surmised that they had
something to do with the Austrian war-
ehip. Tho pursuit of the Cristobal Colon
was kept up until 2 o'clock in the after-
noon. Site was the fastest yessel of the
Spauieh squadron, and would probably.
have escaped if it had been a question of
speed alone, but her pursuers were con-
stantly pounding her with solid shot and
shell, arid she finally gave up in despair the
attempt to get away. She grounded at a
point some sixty miles west. of Santiago.
She was the only one of the Spanish veesels
that lowered her colors, which she did as
she went ashore. During the 'whole en-
gagement the firing was very heavy. The
firing by the Spanish vessels was very poor,
and none of the American ships were in•
jured. One manlaboard the Brooklyn was
killed by an exploding shell. The total
loss of the Spaniards is not yet known, bet
must have been very heavy, not alone from
the American lire, hut from drowning and
from the explosions that occurred on the
Spanish wars] iipsafter they were run ashore.
WAtt Nuns.
The surrender of Santiago has been de-
manded, but refused, and it is probable
that ere this the city has been bombarded.
Tho London and such European news-
papers as comment on the destruction of
Admiral Cervera's squadron advise Spain
to accept the inevitable before worse
happens. .
A despatch say; that feelers have been
put out from Spanish quarters with a view
to ascertaining how the powers and the
United States are likely to regard the terms
of peace that Spain ie willing to propose.
Premier Sagasta of Spain, is credited
with the statement, 'Though the American
warships may destroy our squadron in the
harbor, yet we will pursue tbo war. There
are in Cuba 100,000 men ready to die in its
defence, but they will not yield.
Here's an almost incredible story of Span-
ish stupidity, if any story of Spanish stu-
pidity is incredible. When the United
States warship Charleston, on the way to
the Philippines, shelled one of the ports in
the Caroline Islands, the Governor of the
plane sent a message to express his grati-
fication at the salute, but that he could not
return it because he had no powder. When
informed of the exact significance of the
oanconading ho expressed great indignat-
ion, and said that he ht.d not known st a
state of war between the United Stet;,a and
Spain existed.
While the wife and children of Robert
Nugent, at Emerson, Man., were paying a
visit to a neighbor a child was missed. A
search was made and the little one's feet
were seen at the bottom of the well just
above the surface of the water. The well
being a bored one of about a foot in diam-
eter, it was impossible to get down to its
