WHERE WILL THE MONEY 60?
Where did the money conte from? is
R question that has been constantly
asked slime the opening of the Gainey
investigation, and now it begins to be
in order to ask where the money will go
to. saye the Toronto Star.
Mr. Gamey has paid into court $2000
which he says is not his, but was given
him to corrupt him Rs a member of the
legislature. In ease the judges decide
that Mr. Gamey's charges have not been
made good, will the 1200) be handed
back to the member for Manitoulin
If thin is not corrupt motley, the court
Will I1,19e no claim on it, nor do we see
how it contd legally be applied to pay-
ing the expunged of the investigation.
lOr. Stratton says the money never was
his, end Mr. Gooney can scarcely accept
it hack after having laid it on the table,
not as his own property, but as the
I,toof of another mans guilt.
But it is not only the $2000 that is
concerned. There is also an item of
11200 to be dieposed of somehow. Mr.
Gamey- says he borrowed tide amount
of Mr. Sullivan's stare of the plunder,
so that today, according to his own
story, he hag yet to produce and lay on
the table 112110. Ne either owed this
gum to Sullivan or ho should lay it
aylongside the 13300, which is ownerless,
tle swears it is not his, and yet who
can claim it from him, cud who can
withhold the 32000 now in could (roil
hint if Mr. Stratton be not cont'i,fed of
the charge made against him ? Nye
beg therefore to subunit the new ques-
tion; Where will the money go to?
N01'ES AND COMMENTS,
-Fifty years ago on Saturday the
first railway train ran out of Toronto.
Canada has no reason to feel ashamed
of her progress in the last half century.
-O'ltawa'e insurance rates have been
raised 50 cents on the $100. The tend-
ency of such a ch tette will be to cause
the local authorities to scurry about to
improve conditions.
-The Toronto World says that Mr.
R. R. Gainey has sacrificed a good deal
on the altar of the Stratton invostiga-
'ion, and now that he is to be judicially
divested of that $1200 he borrowed from
Frank Sullivan he might as well make
au end of his available assets by giving
charity his watch and chain.
-Rev. E. 13. Chestnut, for 23 years a
pastor in the Presbyterian church, was
on Friday night received into the Bap-
tist church. lie gives as his reason for
the change that he could not accept the
Presbyterian theory of infant baptism.
He was horn in Tyrone county, Ireland,
40 years ago. and was educated there.
He came to Canada in 1801, and receiv-
ed a call to St. Catharines, later to New
Westminster, British Columbia, thence
to Carluke, Ontario, He expects to go
to the Canadian west.
jeeland Dorr Kent has been found
guilty at Rochester of the death el Ethel
81att:he Dingle, the former Hamilton
girl. The verdict is one of which all
who have carefully followed the cess
will approve. Kent, in spire of the
eulogies of his counsel and his own
posing, appears as a wretch beneath
contempt, and the woman who calls
hien husband deserves sincere sympathy.
Prohably influence such as is so often
1101d in New York state rimy *00015 a
new trial olid even defeat justice, but
pttbtiu opinion is with the jury in its
timber, And there is a lesson in the
cane for many a foolish girl. There are
many such as Kent ready to facilitate
a wayward girl's descent as soon as she
deviates from the straight path, and,
like hint, to put ell the blame on her,
Think over it, girls. It is the first step
aside that invites ruin. Remember uu-
fortunate Ethel Dingle.
-Mr. Robert Holmes, M,P., writing
- , Ito his paper, the Clinton New Era, says
that the dinner given by the Hon. Wm,
Paterson last Thursday was a "soft
drinks "one, He continues; Sir Wilfrid
was present, this being the first public
dinner he has attended since his return
from the contieent some months ago.
When he rose to speak he was meet
enthusiaotically received, and when he
stated that his health was better, and
that he was ready for any emergency,
the assurance Was received with un-
feigned pleasure. Only on two occa-
1 siou, hits ha refereed to the question of
his health. Once in caucus and on
this occasion. He acknowledged that
when lie first came back to this country
ho thought it was all up with him, and
that he would have to hand over the
reigns of office to others, but a kind
providence had restored him to health,
and he reverently expressed his grati-
tude, saying it was almost enough to
tempt a man to be siek in order that he
(night the better appreciate the kind
friends he had.

-The popularity of Rev. R. S. W.
Howard, the new rector of Trinity
church, Mitchell, is evidenced by- the
fact that his stipend hill been increased
$t00. The rev. gentleman is gradually
bringing together a disrupted congrega-
tion, and his Christian exemple is hav-
ing much to do with advancing the
spiritual prosperity of the church over
which he is pester.
A correspondent in Formosa sends
the following to a Walkerton paper
"A pathetic figure on the village street
is its former great man, Mr. F. X. Mess-
ner, ex -private banker. This gentle-
man once refused a parliamentary
nomination, and his cheque was good
for thousands, Now he is reduced to a
poor condition of life, and left to finish
the trip in poverty and obscurity. His
condition illustrates the cynic's defini-
tion of gratitude: 'A. lively sense of
favors to come.' Mr. Messner was a
benefactor to the church, and also
reared a number of orphan children,
whom he placed in a good condition of
life. It would not hurt Rome of those
who profited by his bounty to provide
for the comfort of his declining years."
