EVENT.—The choirs of the Auburn Presbyterian and Methodist churches, who have for the last few weeks been trained by Mr. George Lethbridge, of Knox church, Goderich, and Mies E. M. Patterson, of Auburn, gave a concert in the Presby- terian church, Easter Monday evening. Rev. '1', B. Coupland, on assuming the chair, made an interesting speech, dwelling chiefly on the power of music to charm and in'pire, giving several historical instances of its power in these respects. The unites] choirs, led by Mr. 1,ethhridge, reeve several selec- tions, which were well received. Mr. Norman Murch, of Clinton, delight- ed ell by his splendid rendition of a patriotic song. In his other selections and when reseendiug to enonree, he was equally effective. Hie songs of the sea, of the home and fireside, thrilled and inspired the audience, as by his distinct articulation, fine a;pressioi and well modulated voice, he couveyed to all his conception of the author's ideas. Hie complete lack of affectation, his ability to interpret correctly and proper- ly express the sentiment, in his selec- tions, made him a host of friends. Rev. J. L. Small, on being introduced, said that in a moment of weakness he pro- mised to be a substitute if any of the talent advertised failed to come, and his fate was that of all substitutes, tie had to fill the gap, caused by the absence of Mies Straiton, of Goderich, who was unfortunately ill. Mr. Small gave "The Volunteer Organist" in a manner that thrilled all present, and added to the esteem in which he is held for his ability he a public speaker. Somehow Auburn hkee a substitute like Mr,, Small. We like to melte him u substitute. Miss McLaren, of Goderich, by her splendid rendition on the violin of Scotland's sweet heart song, that has won univer- sal and lasting favor with each genera- tion from early years until the time of grey hairs and failing step, by its wonderful fidelity to the working of the human heart, was at once into the good graces of the audience and more than realised our anticipstiots of it musical treat, She responded to the encore which was heartily given, with "Almost Pere faded," so pleasingly that a int sioien of some local repute said, "Aye, mon, she cud adverteez 'fuddles learned to talk' and tell no lees either." Colborne's gifted daughter, Mille Mona Walters, increased her reputation ea an elocutionist. Her rapid development in what ought to be her lite profession, at an age so youni , mages it hard to predict to what heights she may yet reach. Her portrayal of a brave young Hollander, resisting his mother's ap- pease, and gahrieg in the end her con- sent to go through a raging storm to rescue a sailor, who proved to be it brother long regarded as beet, was of great power, showing a full grasp of the scene, and an insight into the PREPARING FOR BABY. Beetle, of Belgrave being introduced, gave a splendid address on "The Two Siatere-dinging and Talking," He said both required proper preparation. We spend money, and spend it well, for music, but we should not forget to acquire information on the events of the day, the questions affecting the interesta of the public; read standard authors, for in habits of thinking con- nected with what we read, we prepare ourselves to express our ideas in the very best way we can. His renlinisen- res of travelhis references to public men who were entertaining talkers, hie nippy Scotch wit that leaves a taste in the mouth for a week, added much to the interest of the address. We all said, "Haste ye hack again!" Mr. Lethbridge, who has been the musical instructor of the choirs, has the hee'•ty thanks of all for his able end pains- taking efforts, which tended in uo small degree to the success of the musieel part of the program, and his own ex- cellent voxel powers added much to the fine renditions of the choire. The ladies of the choirs and of tbe two congrega- tions arranged a splelidid luncheon in the Presbyterian tnatee for the enter- tainers. Notwithstanding the unfavor- able evening, Auburn supported Miss Pattereou and made the concert n finan- cialauceese.
