yearn in the old land. He was married
to Miss Pethick, and with his bride et
once embarked for Canada, first sett-
ling in London, where be was employed
for eight or ten years with the hard-

25 years ago he decided to engage in
bueinees, forming a partnership with
Mr. U, Pethick, and went to Wingham,
aid was successful in eetablishiagare-
munerative business, and enlisting the
confidence of the public to no small de-
gree, Mr. Pethick died some years
ago, and the bueinees has since been
carried on by Mr. Smith. The deceased
was a man of sterling integrity; hon-
esty and uprightness may be said to
have characterized his business deal-
ings. Of a quiet, genial manner, he had
many warm friends. Besides the sor-
rowing widow there are left to mourn
his lose, a son, Mr. Charles P. Smith,
agent of the Bank of Hamilton at Ger-

St. Paul's church, conducted by Rev.
Wm, Lowe. The remr.;ns were after-
wards laid to rest in Wingham ceme-
tery...The following official statement
was handed the press for publicatiou:—
On instructions from the county crown
attorney, Coroner Towler issued a war -
rest for an official investigation of the
cause of the late Mr. S. J, Smith's
death. The town was full of wildest
rumors, hut on careful and thorough
iivestigatioti of all those rumors, and
the obtaining of all available infor-
mation and evidence by the coroner
and Chief Vnnelorutau, there was
nothing discovered that would point
to foul play, or implicate anyone
in the cause of Mr. Smith's injuries,
which unfortunately resulted in his
death. The injuries were no doubt the
result of a fell on an icy walk. The
warrant was therefore withdrawn, and
an offieiel report forwarded by the
coroner to the county officials,
