In the towns and. cities the societies
hold meetings. A number of commuirittes
go together and have meetings. At these
meetings they knit, make bandages,
pyjamas, pillow covers and sheets. They
knit sweaters, wristlets, socks anti caps.
'I: hey send these things to them every
once in a while, The Red Cross societies
have concerts, banquets, bazaars and
teas to get money. They use the money
to buy yarn and other necessary arcticles
for their work. Many women make eat-
ables and send them to the boys they
know, If there are boys who go away
from a town or a city their friends send
them boxes with chocolates, cake, fruit,
cigars, tobacco, pie and other eatables in
them Some of the boxes are sent direct
to them but some of them are sent to the
Red Cross headquarters, ,
When the soldiers were away doing
their bit for their country, the people
tried to do as much as they could by giv-
ing their time and money to them. The
Red Cross societies remembered the boys
when they came home by giving, them
gifts to show appreciation of their work.

A strong appeal to the pat riotic spirit
dominates the Nelson Day Campaign to
raise half a million dollars to be spent in
the Dominion under the auspices of the
Navy League of Canada. Much of the
proceeds of the drive which takes place
October 21, 22, 23, v: ail be devoted to the
work of training Canadian Lads for service
on the seas.
The Navy League has already establish
ed Boys Naval Brigades in the principal
cities of the Dominion and most encourag- ,
ing results are being accomplished.
Training is provided free to the boys who
are being made into skilled seamen for the
Merchant Marine. This will ultimately
prove of inestimable benefit to the nation.
Canada's future must depend largely on
getting surplus products to the World's
markets and the Dominion must maked
her own sailors I'
in addition to the needs of the Naval'.
Brigades the Navy League has established
a Sailor's home and Institutes at. Canadian i
ports, and money is required to maintain I
and extend this .estimable work. All
Canadains . are called upon to make the
Nelson Day Campaign a success simili'nr
to that which crowned the Sailors Week
Campaign last year.
