LAID To REST. —On Friday morning
week the many friends and acquain-
tances were deeply pained to hear of
the sudden death of Mrs. T. K. Powell,
at her home, lot 11, con. 6, Turnherry,
of inflammation, at the age of 47 years.
On Tuesday Mrs. Powell was in town
and looked as healthy and well as any-
one could wish, but contracting a cold,
infliumnittion came on and in spite of
all that medical aid could do she suc-
cumbed to the grim destroyer on Fri-
day morning. The deceased was a
daughter of the late John Johnston,
of Turnherry, and a sister of Mrs. Jno.
Robinson, of the 8th con., Mrs. Robt.
Weir, of the 6th cou., and William
Johnston, of London. The remains
were laid to rest in the Wingham cem-
etery. on Saturday, and on Sunday
morning Rev. Wm. Lowe, in his ser-
mon referred feelingly to the virtues
and the Christian charity of the noble
worker whom God had called ton better
world. A husband, three sons and a
daughter are left to mourn the loss of
an affectionate wife and kind and lov-
ing mother, and their many friends
join in extending their sympathy in
the gteat bereavement that has over-
taken them.

Eons"( YEARS AGO.— It is just forty
years ago since Wingham was first
surveyed. The Government surveyers
intended that the town site should be
in t he place now called Lower Wing -
ham, and it was laid out as a town
plot, while Upper Winghain was sur-
veyed into park Iot,s, John Taylor, of
Zetland, being one of the surveyor's
assistants, and helping to drive the
last stake. This was in 1850. In that
year John ('ornyn and his four sons
moved to this netirliborhood and in
1850 built the first house in the corpor-
ate limits of the present tovvn, on the
site where the Queen's hotel now stands.
The first settler in the town plot of
Lower Wingliam was Edward Farley,
who moved there in 1858 and who is
still living in the same place. Next to
arrive in the new town was Edward
1,-oley, who conducted a store, and he
