The course of the Liberal Govern- ment in the matter of Ministerial travelling reminds one of the old say- ing, that ‘v (wen the devil got sick The devil a saint would be! When the devil got well, The devil asaint was he. The journeying of the Conservative Ministers in private cars was denounc- ed by the Liberal members in the House and by the Liberal press to such a degree that the f'u'mes and general public were led to regard it as a piece of extravagance that was in some way peculiarly characteristic of the wicked Tories and altogether beyond the capacity of the economical Liberals. The Government car "Cumberland" has heen held up to public condemna- tion by Liberal newspapers as the scene of Ministerial orgies and criminal wastefulness of public funds that could never take place under Liberal rule. The private car for Ministers atour was denounced in unmeasured terms and pointed many an argument intended to fasten upcn the Government the charge of extravagance. Alter the record made by the party on this ques- tion, it was fully expected that the advent, of a Liberal Government would involve the exit of the Ministerial car, and the use by the members of the Cabinet of a Pullman car. But those who expected such self-de- nial on the part of the Liberal Minis- ters have been sadly dissappointed. No sooner was Sir Oliver Mowat sworn in as Minister of Justice than he board- -ed a private car at Ottawa and it took him to Toronto. His example has been followed by all the rest of the Minis- ters; and at this writing Hon. J. Israel Tarte and his family are speeding across the continent on the Govern- ment, car Cumberland, which was pro- visioned in true Government style, and contains a staff of cooks, waiters, etc., for the proper care of the ruan from Quebec, for whom, as Mr. Laur- ier says, "nothing is too good," And all this is at the expense of the country and in defiance of the protests of Mr. McMullen, which fill pages of Hansard, and the denunciations of the practice that have emanated from every possible Liberal source. In Op- position the Liberals were undoubted economists. In power they are prov- ing themselves spendthrifts. The offic'',al hnlf•vetirly report of the Grain Trunk Railway way issued at, Montreal. The "sunny ways" are not yet, up to the necessary candle-power to do the business. Mr. Greenway has devolped no symp- toms of sunstroke. Nor does the political atmosphere about bins seem talo sultry. On the contrary, there is it frostiness in it that, threatens to nip the tender hopes of Mr. Sifton in the bud. A frostiness which must, have made Mr. Tarte uncomfortable. For Mr. Greenway was not at the banquet. Ile was building his Karn -probably tt. hank horn, high -roofed, and with a double driveway on his Crystal City farm, It takes more than 8 portfolio for Mr. Sifter] to make him wilt. The Grits and the Government car at the public expense seem to agree as one harmonious whole, the independ- ent (and denouncing) Goderich Signal included. No purely third party, as a party, can gaits success in Canada at the present tune. In Canada the '`business is business" methods have been established by the Reform party, and the era of extrava- gance in fiscal matters has hegun. How grateful the elector's of Canada should be on the approaching Thanksgiving anniversary ! A despatch from Winnipeg Friday week says that Hon. Mr. Tarte made a speech at the French settlement of St. Norbert, when he practically admitted that Laurier was betraying both Cath- olics and Protestants. The Goderich Signal has in tunes past nauseously denounced Conserva- tive Ministers for riding in Government cars at the expense of the country-, but as a purely independent journal silent- ly justifies Tarte, the Minister of Pub- lic Works, junketing over the country in the downy couch with darkey waiters thrown in. Such is Grit fault- finding and independent consistency! Before the elections the Grits were pledged to abolish the National Policy root and branch, and the Grit press throughout the country re-echoed the welken of their leaders. Before the elections the Grit's declared they knew what should and should not he done. Briefly stated, the complaint which had heen made and was the subject of inquiry, was that immediately after the 1n.it election a vacancy had been created in the ofTice of postmaster at Cohuorg, to which Charles tiuillett, a brother of the member for West Northumberland had been appointed.
