ed Government, the only changes of
importance being the retirement of Sir
Hibbert Tupper, the ,taking in of Sir
Charles Tupper as Secretary of State,
the appointment of Mr. Dickey as Min-

Minister of Militia, with Co. Prier as
Controller of Inland Revenue. The
other Ministers take their former port-
folios.
EXPOSURE TO DISEASE
Does not necessarily nreau the contrite
tion of disease provided the system is
in a vigorous condition, with the blood
pure and all the organs in healthy ac-
tion. When in such a condition con-
tagion is readily resisted and the dis-
ease germs can find no lodgment.
Hood's Sarsaparilla is the hest medic-
ine to build up the system because it
rnttkes pure, rich blood, and pure blood
is the basis of good health. In cold
weather it is especially necessary to
keep up the health tone because the
body is subject to greater exposure and
more liable to disease. Hood's Sarsa-
parilla is the safeguard of health.
Mr, C. Donnelly, wholesale liquor
dealer, Alliston, Ont., was troubled for
years with Itching Piles. He was pur-
suaded by Jas. McGarvey, Alliston, liv-
ery man, to use Chase's Ointment,
which he did, was cured, has had no
return of them and highly recommends
this Ointment its a sovereigu cure for
piles.
It has been finally settled that Dr.
Jameson and his officers shall be con-
veyed as prisoners to England, where
they will be arraigned before the pro-
per tribunals.

COWS IN WINTER.
THEY OUGHT TO BE PROPERLY FED
AND SHELTERED.
The Change From Green to Dry Food -
Au Important natter for Sao Dairyman
-Hail Feeding a Milch Cow Is Never
['rentable.
Unless good treatment in given at
tbia time the cows will begin to fall In
their milk, and either go dry entirely
or else give such a small atnount of
xrilk that it is hardly worth milking.
When the change from green to fry
feed is made Is an Important time. If
they can be kept giving a full flow of
milk until they get accustomed to dry
feeding, It will be an easier matter to
keep them giving a full flow.
It is important to provide comfort-
able quarters, as animal heat must
clime from the fond first, and after
what la needed to support llfe, make up
for the daily wastes of the system
and supply animal heat, then milk ( as,
be produced fromhe balance. 1f good
shelter is provided' less food is required
for heat and winter use. But, zs a
choice between keeping a number of
caws and duly securing a small amount
of milk from each cow, a better plan is
to let a part of the cows go dry In
good season in the fall, and take the
feed saved in this way and give to a
few of the better cows, and by liberal
feeding maintain a good flow of milk.
Liberal feeding, with a good milk -
.producing ration, is essential in secur-
ing a good flow of milk during the win-
ter. One of the best rations 1s clover
hay for roughneeos with corn meal,
wheat bran and a small quantity of oil
ureal. This makes one of the very hest
rations I have ever tried. Another good
ration is unthreshed oats run through
a cutting box, with wheat bran and
middlings. I aro satisfied, from Nee
eral years' experience in feeding cows,
that, in nearly all cases, it pays to feed
the milch cows ground feed. A milch
cc w, of all animals on the farm, needs
to be kept quiet so as to require as
little expenditure of nerve force to dl -
gest her food, and the principal advan-
tage with ground feed is that it Is
much easier masticated and easier di-
gested than if fed whole. If a cow is
te give a good flow of milk in winter
:,he ought to be fed all that she will
eat up clean. I prefer clover hay as a
roughness when it can be secured. Next
to this millet cut before the seed has
matured, Is best; then good fodder, cut
before it is too ripe, and shucked out
as soon as the grain is sufficiently dry,
and then store under shelter, is better
an a feed for mllch cows than dry tim-
othy hay.
Cows need but little exercise in win-
ter', If the weather is pleasant they
can be turned out every day, but
v henever it is so cold that they will
stand and shiver when turned out, the
best place for them is in the stables,
here It is reasonably comfortable. IC
care is taken to keep the stables clear,
and to supply plenty of bedding, with
good feed and water, the cows may be
kept under shelter all through the whi-
ter without detriment, and, In nearly
all cases, will give more milk than if
turned out and exposed to the cold and
storms. But either let the cows gi,
dry and winter them largely on hay
or good roughness, or else arrange to
make them comfortable, and feed sufdf-
c:r ntly liberal to maintain a good flow
or milk through the winter, as halt
feeding a milch cow is never profitable.
-N. J. Shepherd.
Design for an Ice Hones.
Many small farm ice houses have to
stand out by themselves, and are thus
exposed to the full effect of the sun's
rays. These falling directly upon the
rcof cause a good deal of heat to be
generated within, to the consequent
k'ss of ice. The illustration shows an
ice house with two roofs, with an air
trace between, which will very greatly
obviate this trouble. Such an extra
r( of can easily be placed upon a small
inu7

building, to the saving of no ermall
amount of ice during the heat of sum-
mer. Every farm should be equipperd
with a well-filled ice house, for ice is
a necessity, not a luxury.

Meat For Henn.
From now on the supply of insects
will begin to grow smellier, until there
will be none left accessible to the poul-
try. During the summer months and
until after frost, the Insects that ars
picked up by fowls that have that lin-
erty, serves as a meat ration to'f% large
extent, and 1t Is not as necessary as a
part of their ration as it Is during the
cold months. It has been established
beyond doubt that meat must be fed
to hens if they are expected to do their
best, and there Is no grain that will
fully take its place. An egg is largely
albumen and lean reat contains a
large percentage of this, and if it is
fed regularly to a flock of hens, and
they are made otherwise'comfortable,
they will lay in winter better than they
wll: tt fed on any other kfnd°rof food.
We have reason to believe that a fleck
of hens fed on a nitrogenous diet, such as
lean meat, wheat and other non-fatten-
ing foods will lay well even when very
fat, and we believe this is liecause she
Is well supplied with the sort of food
that Is rich in the elements that enter
Into the composition o1 eggs. Corn may
be used as a part of the ration, but
meat Is the food that will show Its
effects in the egg basket.
