The Diamond Dyes Make Work Easy and Pleasant. It is admitted by all that the good wife and mother has, in her management of home affairs, many trials and tribulations. These trials and troubles are very fre. quently increased when the mother or daughter makes nee of some of the many deceptive and worthless package dyes put up for home dyeing. Merchants who sell such dyes are certain- ly deserving of public censure and condem- nation. The women of Canada who use dyes with the view of economizing should never be deceived; it is cruel and heartless to do so. However, the case is piain to those who know; the greedy dealer thinks more of hie big profits than he does about the welfare and happiness of his best cus- tomers. All troubles and losses in home dyeing are avoided when the Diamond Dyes are used. Bp their use, work is well and quickly done; results are perfectly satisfac- tory, and the polors are at all times bright, olear, brilliant and fast. In order to guard against all future trouble, you must watch the merchant who recommends the some- thing "just ae good" as Diamond Dyes. Tell him plainly that no other goods are as good as the "Diamond." Take only the "Diamond" and your work will be done easily and well. Dr. Bergin, Conservative M. P. for Cornwall and Stormont, died Thurs- day morning at his home in the town of Cornwall from injuries received through falling downstairs four weeks ago. The deceased made a brave fight for life, but the best needieed skill could not save him. Dr. Bergin was born in Toronto on Sept. 7, 1826, so that he was in his 71st year. He p rad- uated in medicine at McGill College, and practiced at Cornwall. During the Trent affair he raised a company. In 1869 he was promoted to be lieuten- ant -colonel of the Stormont and Glen- garry battalion, and in 1885 he was ap- pointed surgeon -general .to the forces employed to put down the Northwest rebellion. Dr. Bergin had a long par- liamentary career. He was first re- turned for Cornwall by acclamation in 1871, and since that time he has been a prominent figure in the House of Com- mons. By his death, a bye -election will have to take place. There is every reason to believe that a Liberal will be elected to fill the vacancy. Dr. Ber- gin for years held the constituency al - 'noel entirely on his personal popular- ity. He was a genial, kindly-eouled man, who had not an enemy on either side of the chamber. AN ACHING BACK And the Misery it Causes The kidneys cannot talk and the only way they have of letting ne know when they are sick is by making our backs ache. If it is only a little ache the kidneys are only a little sick. If it is a big, peace- de- stroying, nerve-racking ache, the kidneys are more than a little sick. In either ease it must be attended to at once. Doan's Kidney Pills sot directly me the kidneys, make them strong and healthy, and stop aching becks in every case, Here is a sample case. Mrs R. S. Gegen, Clinton, Ont., says, "Bine* I was 19 years of age I bare suf- fered from lame back and other kidney troubles which seemed bo become worse as I grew older. Flier "Although I had taken a great deal of medioine hoping to get relief I am sorry to say that none of the medicines I tried were succeeaful. However, I am now happy to *tate that the Doan's Kidney Pills which I bowght at Allen A Wilson'* drag store proved the remedy I had w long been searching for. "They were just what I needed because I commenced to improve at once after taking them, and now do not hesitate to say that every vestige of pain has been removed from my bank, and also that I am in much better health in other ways as a result of tieing theme remarkable pill.," Change of 41r. A very favorite last resort of the eigh- teenth century physician was to send a patient to visit the plane of his birth, since it was thought that "natal air" would he likely to prose peculiarly bene- ficial. This last theory, although some- what ludicrous when viewed from our modern standpoint, strikes me as being something more than a mere piece of plausible emptrlclsm. It shows that, In spite of their terrible faith in ph,sic, the doctors of those days did not lose sight of the tmportenee of conforming to na- ture's programme. Although the beneficial effect of sea voyages was to some extent recognized, it la easy to understand that the ships of the aeventoenth and eighteenth centuries, damp and stuffy below, and provisioned with salt junk and hard hlsoults, scarcely gave n broken-down invalid afalr chance of deriving any groat amount of good from a change of air taken under such conditions. Generally speaking, we now consider that sen and mountain air owes its vir- tue to its freedom from organic impuri- ties. Probably it is this quality more than any other which gives it Its reviv- ing effect on these who have been living in the ()logged and polluted atmoepbero of largo towns. Yet purity of the at- mosphere per se is no preventive of those very ailments which bring the majority of patients to seaside watering planes and highland sanitariums: If any, in- valid who has thus sought relief were to take oareful note of the natives of his favorite health resort, he would probably bo dlsgnieted to find that pale, sickly children and ailing adults were by no means uncommon. Patients with, weak lungs are often sent to winter in Devon and Cornwall, althongh the mortality from pulmonary diseases among the per- manent residents of these favored ooun- tles is not a whit less than among the dwellers in the midlands and the North, Yet the undoubted raoff remains to bo acooupted for teat' such migrants to' . warmer climes almost altdays derive MOW benefit from the -' obange. adai ifedr. fi . d SOMETHING ABOUT TIRES. Tire e :shoe String*, 1S 01 be No More After .., in This year will likely to'e the passing pt the shoe -string tire for road tree, for, „,though an army of u,r: riders will de- mand the smel!est ubtai labia tire, the average wheelnlan will teeter tires of a generous seotioeul diameter says Bear- ings. A Chicago dealer who builds a few wheels each season has several special machines on his floor which are fitted with 2A•inoh pnoumatlos and a trial of one of these will convince the most skeptical advocate of small tires that Gl.ere is more contort and more speed to be bad on rough roads with tires of this size than with 11 of 1%. On the point of comfort there is no chance for an argument, but the speed qualities of the till tire seem probl„ matloul until tested, Fast time has already been made in century runs, and it was a noticeable fact that the riders finished and did not complain of the usual sureness felt by unseasoned men tasulg a long and fast ride. The machines in question are built with a olearanoe of one-quarter of an inch on either side of the tires, making the front forks, rear forks, and stays three inches wide, inside measurement, and while the appearauco of the exces- sively wide works and large tires le not altogether pleasing if the diameter Was reduced to, say two inches, there would be slight objection on the score of looks, Ihe tread of a wheel with twenty -six- inch tires need not he over five and a half inches, for allowing one-fourth inch for tire clearance, seven -eighths for stays and seven -sixteenths for width of cranks, there is still left throe eighths inches to be divided between the two pranks for clearance of the rear forks and this dons not call for flattened tubes, or D -shaped stays. By the substitution of D -shaped stays fcr round tubes the tread could be kept to five 10011e5, which is narrow enough fur anything but track use. The oomfort to be derived from the use of a tiro of two. Mottos and upward of sectional diameter amply repays the rider for the slight loss of beauty the wheel sutlers, and there is a material saving to the uulohine in a season's rid- ing. Spokes will stand up under adverse conditions, and, by reason of the low air pressure within the tire, the Connections and frame of the wheel are saved from the jar which not only reaches the rider of small tires, hut is distributed through- out the entire machine. Whipped at Last. In the logging ()amps of Michigan might makes right, and the man who has whipped all oomers in fair fights is king of his camp.
