According to report, an interesting ex-

(Ill.) Penitentiary. It is proposed to have
threo kinds of sults for prisoners indica-
tive of their deportment. Green sults
will be worn by prisoners of good be-
havior, cadet gray by those who aro less
orderly, and red by those who are ex-
tremely unruly. It is claimed that this
innovation will give the convict the idea
that he can snake an advance in his fel-

ABOUT MARRIAGE LI&'ENSES
Hamilton Times:—When a young
woman makes up her mind to get
married she doesn't lack nerve; she
can, as a rule, give the young man a
bracer. Moreover, she does not need
to go before the issuer of licenses un-
less she desires to do so. The Act
provides that she must B11 out a
schedule and make affidavit thereto,
but this may be done before any jus-
tice, notary or commissioner. We
don't think there is any great grievance
in that, and if it tends to discourage
clandestine marriage, it will effect a
needed reform. An issuer of licenses
Ie not required to read the law to the
bride; a blank can be prepared for her,
filled and declared to privately; the in-
tending groom, or one of the parties,
however,'must'make an affidavit:before
the issuer. The Government might
require the sealing up of the legal re-
turn, however; the use ofost cards
for such a purpose smacks of too rigid
economy.
Mitchell Recorder:—The new marri-
age law is only another sample of the
ridiculously absurd legislation demand-
ed and brought about by political
quacks of the pulpit. The new act
pleases nobody but a few parsons of
the Anglican church who were at the
bottom of it. However, any young
lady who comes to the Recorder office
to swear out a license in accordance
with the demands of this new act, and
feels like swearing at the act itself,
and the parsons who instigated it, and
the Legislature that passed it, she
etlall have our sympathy and encour-
agement. In fact we don't mind turn-
ing in and helping her to swear.
Waterloo Chronicle:—Th is taking

riage license, and having the family

A romantic story is told of the wife
of Thos. E. Watson, Populist nominee
for Vice -President, which is of special
interest at this time. After one of the
battles of the civil war a richly dressed
baby was found among the dead and
wounded. No parents came to claim
the child. They say that father and
mother had perished in the strife. It
is not known whether they were on the
Northern or Southern side. But a
Soutoern soldier and his wife took the
child they had found and cared for her
as their own. The years passed and
the little girl grew to be a handsome
and cultivated lady. Then young Tom
Watson, farmer, lawyer, married her.
and. they have lived, happily ever since.

INSURANCE MA1'TERs.
To the Editor of the New Era :
Dirtn Sim—The artiole by "Legal
Reserve" on Fraternal societies in your
Wine of the 7th inst., contain very many
wholesome truths. It shows very clearly
that the man who expecte to get something
for nothing in Assesemen,t Fraternal, or
Insurer ice societies will certainly have their
hopes blasted. But the writer erre when
he speaks of the Ancient Order of Foresters
as not commencing to do insurance till
after 1871. Ancient Order of Foreetera has
been doing insurance, (funeral reeeipte)
and (siok benefits) for over ore hundred
years, and is in a position to continue to do
so for centuries to come. It "Legal .Re-
serve" would take the trouble to read up
the Ancient Omer of Foreatera, as he has
regular Life Insurance, he would not re-
fer to this solid eootety as he has, The
Anoient Order of Foresters is aooumula-
ting a reserve like the regalar line insur-
ance companies are doing. Its entire ac-
cumulation amounting to over $26,000,000.
This is a guarantee that the Ancient Or3er
of Foreotere can, and will, pav a hundred
dollars on all its oontraote. the Canadian
der artment is following the footsteps of
the Parent body, and at present collecting
a sufficient premium to lay by a reserve ac.
cording to the government standard of
valuation. All societies that aim at hon-
est dealing with their members should at
least aooumnlate a reserve according to
this standard for the time when old age
comes on. The transfer of the "Provincial
Provident" and "Canadian Mutual Aid,"
the collapse of the Relief society, London
Masonic Mutual, and,about dozen others,
show clearly that the insurance at one third
the coat cannot be given; and the sooner the
publio realize that cheap ineuranoe is no
mo; honest than cheap money the better.
The one robe the man at the time, the
other robs the widows and helpless orphans.
Thanking you, Mr Editor, for spreading
insurance knowledge.
I am yours truly,
39 Richmond S1.W. W. Wittreass,
Toronto. Permanent Sec.

C. II. King, Water Valley, Miss., cured by
Ayer's Sarsaparilla
"For five years, I suffered untold misery
from muscular rheumatism. I tried every
known remedy, consulted the best physf.
clans, visited Hot Springs, Ark., three times,
spending $100 there, besides doctors' bills;
hut could obtain only temporary relief. My
flesh was wasted away so that I weighed
only ninety-three' pounds; my left arm and
leg were drawn out of shape, the muscles
being twisted up In knots. I was unable to
dress myself, except with assistance, and
could only hobble about by using a cane. I
had no appetite, and was assured, by the
doctors, that I could not live. The pains, at
times, were so awful, that I could procure
relief only by means of hypodermic Injec-
tions of morphine. I had my limbs bandaged
In Clay, In sulphur, In poultices; but these
gave only temporary relief. After trying
everything, and suffering the most awful
tortures, I began to take Ayer's Sarsaparilla.
Inside of two months, I was able to walk
Without a cane. In three months, my limbs
began to strengthen, and in the course of a
year, I was cured. My weight has increased
to lad pounds, and I am now able to do my
full day's work as a railroad blacksmith."
