A sad accident, which is likely to
prove fatal, occurred at Hillsbury on
Thursday. Two young men, named
Alex. Gibson and Horace Royce, were
loading grain on the farm of Mr Lo-

Gibson was on the load, when the
horses suddenly started, and the un-
fortunate man fell backward, lighting
on his head. He was taken to his
home in the village, where he lies in a
hopeless condition, his body being
completely paralyzed from the neck
downwards. There is a large family
of small children who will be left in
very poor circumstances.

The late lightning storms, followed
as they have been by so many fires,
have revived the interest and specula-
tion in lightning rods. We are not
going to discuss the abstract question
as to whether or not lightning rods
are a protection to buildings, but this
we will say, that a lightning rod not
well planted in the ground, with its
foundation either in water or damp
earth, is as useless as a whipcord.
Dry earth is a non-conductor of elec-
tricity, and if the lightning strikes it
will scatter it asunder like dry timber.
Moist earth is a conductor, and light-
ning striking it makes no impressirrn
upon it. Hence it will be easily- seen
that while one will attract, the other
will reeist lightning. No man living
knows all or even much about electri-
city. The most learned know only
that it is a force, and the greatest of
all forces in nature, and that it can be
controlled or directed within certain
natural laws. If you invest in light-
ning rods at all, go first and learn
somethingabout what is required re-
garding teir erection.

The Marketing of A014@g,
What to do with all the apples is a gues-
tion in which the farmers Of Nortoni are
very mush interested Net et present. Ap-
plee are a drug an the Market and the in.
ddioatione ere that tall and winter apples
will be just as plentiful ae the early fruit
with prides as low in proportion. Owing
to the raid maturing, experts say that the
fruit will not keep well and that the apples
for shipment must be very carefully select-
ed and packed. New York pity offers one
of the leading markets for prime Canadian
apples and the following article from the
Canadian Hortioulturiet, on "Canadian
apple for New York City," may prove of
value to readers.
"The fruit moat difficult to obtain of fine
quality,eaoh s ring,hasbeen apples. Apples
from south of Lake Erie and NewYork State
are poor keepers, and leak in favor. The
vary best apple country upon this continent
is in Ontarlo, weat of Kingeton, and south of
Georgian Bay. The akin of the apple in
that seotion is thin and and high -colored,
the flesh fine grained and brittle, the flavor
a brisk, rich sub-aoid; fine to eat oat of the
hand, or to nook. They are better keepers
than any apples that I know of. By the
time young brew planted now dome into
full bearing, we shall have in this Republic
100,000,000 of consumers; and if all the
land in the seotion of Outazlio I have nam-
ed waa planted with apples, this market
would oonanme them at remunerative
prices. There ie not the slightest danger
of over-stooking this market with apples of
prime quality exposed for sale in March,
April and May.
"I have never tasted a prime red Astra-
ohan sinoe I came here, snob ae I grew in
my garden -in- Oshawa -although- I have
hunted the markets for them. I suggest
that some fruit dealer send to this market
some fine red Aetraobane this summer in
kegs. or half barrels, pack them carefully;
ship to some good commission merohante
in New York, brand them plainly as from
Canada, and adopt some trade mark so ae
to establish a reputation for the brand, and
I am oonfldent that even after paying the
duty and charges upon them they will yield
a fair prioe. When I resided in Rochester
I sent some Louise bonne de Jersey Pears
to thio market in kegs ( barrels), and 1 re-
ceived for them after deducting all ohargee,
$6.60 per keg; this was in 1860. Had I sent
them in full barrels they would not have
netted me more than $16 per barrel.
Many pereohs are ready to pay $2 for a
keg of fine red Aetraohane, who would not
give $6 for a barrel; superiority is always
in demand,the n-arket is never over-etooked,
while the market is glutted with inferiority
at all seasons. Benoni, St. Lawrence,
Gravenstein and Maiden's Blush, might be
Bent here in the same way, as well as Duo -
hese of Oldenburg. The market for prime
Fameuse or Snow apples, is unlimited.
"The success of such an experiment will
depend on the quality of the -fruit and the
care of the packing. When the brand is
established the demand will far exceed the
supply."
Light in Asia—It Shines Clears
Messrs T. Milburn ez Co„ Toronto.
Dear Sirs, --There is light in Asia after
all, and the man that .advised me to try
your Heart and Nerve Pills was a friend in-
deed and truly a friend in need. Before I
started to take them I was languid, weak,
sleepless and nervous. My brain was be-
clouded and I could notcolleotmythoughts,
I had gone through an operation in the hope
of relief but still remained generally brok-
en up, my appetite was gone and I was al-
most without hope or ambition.
Now f feel thoroughly rebuilt through the
use of Milburn's Heart and Nervine Pills,
and it took only three or four weeks to do
the work.
I often think of the years of suffering I
might have escaped had I known of Mil-
bnrn's Heart and Nerve Pilla In time; bat I
am grateful to be restored to health at last,
and gladly recommend the medicine that
cured me.

rvovet Feature In Telephone Work.
While the fact that the roar of Niagara
Falls has recently been heard in New
York over the telephone is generally
known, but little has been said of the
novel manner in which the transmitter
was brought within range of the noise of
the fallit.g water. After investigation, it
was decided that the Cave of tb¢ Winds
would be the best place at which to
ogther the sound, as there the falls can
ho approached more closely than nt al-
most any other place. On a rooky ledge
In the cava right under the center fall,
was placed a wooden box, in which was
secured a telephone, with a 'solid back"
transmitter. To this was attached a sheet -
iron funnel, 20 inches long and about 14
inches in diameter at the outer end.
Three batteries were placed In the box,
hut only two were used. The box was
wrapped in canvas to protect the appar-
atus from the constantly falling spray.
When the sound was first listened to at
the New York end, the impression it
conveyed was that of the hissing of a
gigantic sheet of spray, and hardly a
suggestion of the "thunder" of the falls
was audible. This wasanbsequently rem-
edied by moving the box in the cave. to
the point where it was produced by the
falling tons of water. OIlb, a sharp hiss -
Ing sound, like escaping steam, is made
by the water as it curls over the rook be-
low and goes sweeping out into the river.
The other is the deep pounding roar
made by the striking of the mighty col-
umn on the rooks or Rater below. By
moving the telephone 12 or 15 feet fur-
ther back, the roar was caught and the
/Mooing proportionately reduced. The re -
suit was that an average note was heard
at the other end of the 462 -mile line,
although it was as curious as interesting
to observe how from time to time it
would be dominated alternately by the
deeper diapason of the impact of the
falls, or the sibilant hurtling of the
spray.

There is a branch of the pneumo -gas -
