W. T. R. Preston, alderman apd Provin-
cial librarian, Toronto, has been notified
that the charge of collecting and pending
money illegally in the Harty-Smy` .;',e1eo-
tion at Kingston in January, 1896, was,uis;
missed, at the assizes there, Mr. Justice
Osler presiding. Dr. Smythe's counsel
announced that there was not eafiicient
evidence to prosecute the case and the judge
promptly dismissed it. ' Mr. Preston Says
that he was fully prepared to answer the
Charge and ie sorry that it was not allowed
to go to trial. As it ie he may prefer a
charge of perjury against the man who
laid the information.

MONTREAL LIVE STOOK MARKETS.
There were about 550 bead of butchers' cat-
tle, 100 calves 4 sheep and one spring lamb
offered for sale at the East End Abattoir, The
butchers were out in considerable numbers,
but trade was unusually dull, and prices were
even lower than on Thursday, and it is probable
that a considerable number of cattle will not
be sold. Choice beeves sold at from 2110 to 310
per lb pretty good animals from 21 to 33e per
lb, and common stock, including a number of
milkmen's strippers, at from 2o to 23c per lb.
Calves sold at from ee to $8 each; superior veal°
only bring more. There were no sales of
sheep reportod, but the spring lamb sold for $7.
Fat hogs are rather dull of rale, and prices are
from $4 to $4 10 per 100 lbs.
